ZOOTOPIA 2: Failing to creatively expand the playfulness of its predecessor, it's a sequel jammed with references to classics of cinema, painfully basic puns it keeps beating you over the head with, characters built around a single gag, and little else 📽️

Sorry kids, but #StrangerThings5 is off to a rough beginning of the end. The final season of the hit Netflix series has the longest episodes, but also the most painfully clunky dialogue. It only makes one nostalgic for its start nearly a decade ago 📺

For @seattletimes.com, spoke to legendary Palme d'Or-winning director Jafar Panahi while he was in town touring his incisive IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT. We talked making films for yourself, creating art in the shadow of authoritarianism, and his fears for America 📽️

Back on @citycastseattle.bsky.social to talk all things TRAIN DREAMS, the state of local film production in Seattle and Washington, Harbor Island being on the chopping block, what's up at SIFF, & more (alt title for the episode: why I was so tired this past week)📽️

#ICYMI or are looking for some afternoon reading, best check out my interview with Lily Gladstone below or in today’s print edition of @seattletimes.com along with all their great work. We talked docs, history, and the (yes, still happening) THE MEMORY POLICE 📽️

🎉BUCKET LIST BYLINE ALERT🎉: For @avclub.com, I wrote about the transcendent, haunting TRAIN DREAMS (which is still playing @thegrandcinema.bsky.social ) and how it cuts into the Pacific Northwest. It's got history on its mind just as it urgently speaks to the present📽️

The final trailer for TRAIN DREAMS is here. Will have more to say about it very soon, but trust me when I say there's so much beauty to how this film is stitched together. It continues to play @thegrandcinema.bsky.social for the next week and you should absolutely see it on the big screen if ya can📽️

BREAKING: Tom Mara is out as Executive Director at SIFF, closing a tumultuous year for the local arts organization. The news was announced today to staff and a search for a replacement is now set to begin sometime in 2026 📽️

Seattle film production facility Harbor Island Studios found its funding on the Metropolitan King County Council’s budgetary chopping block — but the show will go on for at least a while longer. However, a solution is needed soon 📽️ My story for @seattletimes.com: www.seattletimes.com/entertainmen...

For @seattletimes.com, spoke with Lily Gladstone about lending her voice to the documentary BRING THEM HOME (which premieres Nov. 24 on PBS), recording her narration at her regular Seattle studio, and how history echoes with her upcoming film THE MEMORY POLICE 📽️

Went on KUOW’s SOUNDSIDE to discuss the state of independent movie theaters in Seattle and how the film landscape is having an impact locally. Come for the fortuitous Jafar Panahi cheering, stay for my closing thoughts on what I'll be looking at in 2026 📽️

THE RUNNING MAN: Glen Powell gives his all, but Edgar Wright’s letdown of a Stephen King adaptation is caught in a losing game all its own. Wright may have made it out with some money, but at the cost of becoming just another anonymous hired gun director📽️

Katie Wilson’s lead over Bruce Harrell continues to grow with her now leading 138,489 (50.19%) to 136,513 (49.48%). TLDR: She won. Thus, resharing the podcast episode I did for @citycastseattle.bsky.social once more with a ridiculous image that you'll have to listen to the whole thing to understand.

For @seattletimes.com, I wrote about how the stunning TRAIN DREAMS (in theaters today, Netflix on 11/21) found life in Washington and spoke to the great filmmaker Clint Bentley. Will have yet more on this soon, but consider this a good starting point📽️

PLURIBUS: Rhea Seehorn is excellent in Vince Gilligan’s darkly delightful and incisive sci-fi series. Can't say much about it other than you should absolutely see it and that, while no BREAKING BAD or BETTER CALL SAUL yet, is incredibly promising 📺
