Oh wow, I did not expect to see a Gabriel Knight fan-game! That is really rather cool! :D

Another a-Maze-ing fact to make those who stand in time's shadow Quake in fear! :P

Ah, for the majestic herds of bicycles, interspersed with occasional smaller flocks of unicycles!

And those moments of intensity when a pride of pedicabs cuts into the herd, singling out one of the new or rusty, circled by wheels trying to defend their own, dragging the frame off to feast...

;P

~0:00:15: Indeed, game, being catapulted off through the walls and into the forever-dark of the Outer Void is Bad Luck. :P

You really should have stopped Force-pushing it over. :P

So--to clarify for myself--am I understanding correctly that what you're arguing for is a setup in which, at a given point, the player has available a very limited set of potential inferences, but presented such that it doesn't seem like so limited a set? Combined with quick access to past data?

Ooh, looking good! ^_^

Was Mark Hamil there the help? :P

(I have yet to put mine up--likely either today or tomorrow!)

I'm not sure of what it's going to be when it's done, but right now it puts me in mind of a rusalka (or Gollum) rising up out of a body of water...

... With plastic balls floating on the surface. ^^;

I will say, it is amusing--and on-brand--to imagine that you keep Godzilla on a leash. :P

The Predator: "Dude, close your mouth, there's drool everywhere--at least don't stand close to me with it..." :P

Congratulations! I'm glad that you're back home! ^_^

I'm not sure of who thought that loosing you on an unsuspecting populace would be either safe or wise, but I'll at least enjoy the carnage. (From a distance.) ;P

The Alien (which is a predator) and the Predator (which is an alien). :P

So it looks like I'll likely be wanting to now create map model-files separate from the level model-files, the former to be all loaded at startup...

(And I'll probably simplify things a bit to make life easier: no more item-icons, likely.)
November 28, 2025 at 8:43 AM
Now that I'm loading levels on-demand, maps are no longer loaded until their level is visited within the current session.

Which means that on loading a save, only the map of the current level is visible...

In short, I was loading map-geometry directly from the model-file of each level.

This was somewhat elegant, and didn't incur much more work (outside of one upgrade).

And that was fine... as long as I was loading every level at startup.

Aah, I'm very sorry to read it! Especially looking through the replies and seeing that it might involving something lasting! :( :( :(

Well, I hope that they treat you well there, and that whatever has you in their care is lightened as much as may be!

Do take care of yourself! :(

I'm really glad that it has been such a good year for you, Courtney! ^_^

Here's hoping that it's only the start of more--and better!--good years in your life! ^_^
