We ask final submissions to use endnotes when published versions have footnotes because (as I understand it!) this best facilitates the work that copyediting and production colleagues do on the final piece. But it always takes explaining because it's counterintuitive!

universities got a tiny fee rise that was immediately wiped out by the national insurance raises. they used international student fees to subsidise capped domestic fees and now that’s going to be taken away too. universities are going to collapse and thousands of jobs will go with each collapse.

It does amaze me that there really is quite a bit of surviving material culture from London's strangers in this period -- musical instruments, Italianate glassware etc. And that's before we get to the incredibly rich accounts of material culture in the surviving sources!
