A season and a half of project runway, and the only thing the judges and I have agreed on is you don't put a bow around a fat woman's belly on top of a tent dress. Everything else, if they rave I think it's goofy, and if I'd wear it the designer goes home.

Sometimes the first thing nature makes you say is "what the heck is that?!" In this case, we're looking at a bunch of Jacobson's Giant Scale Insects (Icerya jacobsoni).

These insects (of which there are almost twenty gathered on the underside of a leaf) have oval, beige-colored central bodies with lots of white, spindly appendages growing off them. They are quite spectacular to behold.

Sometimes I look at my phone as I go to bed and then I’m wide awake. Today that’s a good thing. This is zagreus similatus, a species described in 2017 and it seems my spotting is the only of its kind on @inaturalist.bsky.social and I’m so excited. It is so cute!!
