But this seemed disrespectful—unintentionally so, I’m sure—but still. It takes no great effort to look at the diner whose order you’re taking and to hand him his cutlery. Sometimes it’s the seemingly small things that send the important signals. 3/

When he brought us napkins and cutlery, he just gave them to me. Now, my son is non-verbal and doesn’t always maintain eye contact, and I understand that some folks might naturally think to look at the customer who answers their questions. 2/

I very often ask my more junior colleagues to read my drafts, and I pay careful attention to what they say and frequently make changes. I work with smart people, and I’m grateful to them for making our work better. No traps.
