It’s ok to be jealous.

End of an era. Lots of legitimate critiques of Joann, but regardless, this is an enormous loss for all current and potential future makers. $42 of many, many, many dollars I’ve spent over the last 40 years.

In 2022, I taught an undergrad course where students picked a topic they cared about and created art to forward social change. One group picked rural health disparities in AL, with a special focus on hookworm. I still have their collage hanging outside my office. Sadly even more relevant today.

New baby quilt top inspired by some of my favorite springtime blossoms. I’m thinking about writing this pattern up. Maybe even scaling it to full/queen size.

Because no one can live off of bad news alone.

The closing of a craft store might not be on the radar of most people. But it’s a sad day for me. Sewing has been a constant since I was a young child and it’s going to now be exponentially more expensive and difficult. At the time that we need people to be able to provide and make for themselves.

I just started rewatching TP for the 18th time last week. RIP David Lynch.

Highlight of my week is when my dogs make it to the daycare insta. Lab-ish puppy on left and poodle on the right. Btw, the poodle turns 16 years old in a couple months!

I’m doing a social media cleanse for the rest of the year, so even though I have LOVED participating in #ArtAdventCalendar, today will be my last post. And it’s a special one. I’m sharing a picture of me and my grandmother when I was young.

Fun pattern. Next time I make it, I might rotate every other swirl #ArtAdventCalendar

Called a “one block wonder” (and some other names too), this quilt technique demonstrates what I like most about quilting: through precision, planning, and a creative eye, you can create something stunning that appears more complicated than it is. #ArtAdventCalendar

I love prints with texture. It seems that quilts made of solids are popular right now, but here’s an example of why I love prints so much. #ArtAdventCalendar

When I got tenure in 2021, I got myself painting lessons. Most of my paintings were not great, but it was fun and I really loved this guy. He looks just like a pet rabbit I had as a kid. His name was Bunny. Clever, I know. #ArtAdventCalendar

Frida Kahlo has been one of my favorite artists since childhood. Proud of my me-made Frida skirt. #ArtAdventCalendar

My first mystery quilt where you get directions each week not knowing the final layout. I decided to join it on the basis of the color scheme, which reminded me of desert sunsets. It ended up having more white than I imagined, but I still love it. Pattern designer: Bonnie Hunter. #ArtAdventCalendar

Today’s art is a quilt I made for a sick family member of my longest friend. I loved how it turned out, but it is bittersweet. Gifting it reminded me of the lesson makers have to learn over and over again - you can’t control how other people receive your gift #ArtAdventCalendar

Maybe this is meta art? Art of art? I started scrapbooking the quilts I made and gifted. This one was an enormous one for my sister. I even made a miniature version of the quilt to put in the scrapbook. It also has fabric scraps and pictures of her with it #ArtAdventCalendar

One of my favorite quilts to make are toddler “I Spy” quilts. They feature big blocks of novelty fabrics and young kids love to find and identify fun things. This one has bears, foxes, dogs, cacti, pineapple, trees, sea horses, and octopi #ArtAdventCalendar

Love this dramatic wing sleeve, inspired by a Mood pattern called Karri. Unfortunately, I made this in June, wore it to a conference in August, and then promptly and incorrectly laundered it in September. It’s now a cropped look, I guess #ArtAdventCalendar

“Amazing Labyrinth,” pattern designed by Krista Zaleski, quilt made by me. I’ve always wanted a hedge maze. This is as close as I’ve gotten. #ArtAdventCalendar

Happy to be participating in #ArtAdventCalendar. I am a sociology professor by day, but I grew up wanting to be an artist and/or fashion designer. These days I spend most of my free time sewing. Over this month, I’ll post quilts, quilt inspirations, and a few garments. Here’s my latest garment.

Christmas sampler quilt. When I first started sewing I had no interest in traditional blocks, but in recent years I’ve discovered how great they are for skill-building, precision, and practicing patience #ArtAdventCalendar

My favorite stage in quilt making is when the top is done, but not backed or quilted yet. I love to hang it outside and admire the sun coming through like stained glass. #ArtAdventCalendar

Another pattern I designed and wrote up. This one is an intermediate pattern in one of my favorite color schemes #ArtAdventCalendar
