To an extent, the consumerisation of higher ed trends to push students towards viewing themselves at least partly as customers rather than as students whose job it is to put in the hard yards to learn and develop skills.

I am forever explaining assignments which, to me, feel fairly basic. I do offer some creative options, which need a bit more context. But so many of my students seem unable to follow instructions, even when I return to them multiple times, write them down, or turn them into games or quizzes.

I read that one of the reasons HS2 has ended up so expensive was that they wanted it to run at 350km/h, and that extra 50km/h means quite a bit more straightening. However, Spain has just announced a 350km Madrid Barcelona line, that will probably be finished before HS2 is.

Does this require experts? Obviously. But mostly it just requires pointing out that some positions have evidence for them and others really don't, and that we can bin the evidence free ones.

Balance isn't what two idiots with different opinions think about something, balance is listening to the various claims then looking out the bloody window to check if it's raining.

This is a point that should be made more with wealth taxes generally. If you have one to start with then you can gradually increase the revenue from it, frog in hot water style.

I find the argument that it doesn't raise "that much" pretty weak. A few billion from those who can afford it is still a few billion more to spend on public services. A comparable tax in the UK would've paid for removing the two child cap. The rich haven't left because of it in Spain.
