@doaj.bsky.social is one of the best things that happened to open access and open science infrastructure.

A quote from the Forum for Open Research in MENA that I am very pleased to share!

Rosalie Lack highlights the impact of @scossfunding.bsky.social to date - impressive! At the same time, she recognises that there is more to do, and more funds are needed to support open infrastructures.

Global open science dialogue is missing African voices. #FORM4Open

Helicopter science is a key challenge when it comes to equitable research practices. I’m loving how Perplexity clarifies this is NOT about helicopters by showing helpful helicopter schematics 🤔 #FORM4Open

Rising research output but low levels of international collaboration - a current challenge of research in the UAE. #FORM4Open

An overview of the financial models that work in various MENA countries. “Various regions are starting to develop multilateral collaborations to support the growth of Diamond OA publishing models,” and there was acknowledgment of the value of initiatives like the @eudch.bsky.social. #FORM4Open

Super interesting - 71% of OA journals found in the MENA region were launched in the last 15 years. As Emily Choynowski highlights, this shows the relatively recent developments in open research in the region. #FORM4Open

Steven Griffiths highlights that research ethics and integrity are an increasingly important part of open research at AUS - going far beyond openness for publications only. He also acknowledges that individual motivations for open research remain a barrier, partly because the time and effort needed.

Great to hear about the ALECSO initiative from Prof Mohamad Sanad Abu-Darwish at the @forumforopen.bsky.social - reflecting on how to connect the Arab region to the world when it comes to open research. Also kudos to the organisers for the very smooth live translation from Arabic! #FORM4open

A touch of systems thinking👇 might be what we need to unlock the transition to open access. #OASPA2025

Great engagement with Malavika’s interactive session at #OASPA2025!

Important call from ACM for publishers to set a hard deadline for their OA transition. Stay tuned for January 2026, when their portfolio will be fully open. 👏 #OASPA2026

A strong call to action. In my own experience, one of the greatest challenges is identifying the ‘right people’ to engage in each region to start partnerships. Languages are a big barrier, too, as are time zone differences - it might sound silly/very practical, but it’s a real blocker! #OASPA2025

Valuable overview shared by Dagmar Meyer.

Spoiler alert: this is only the first elephant we see at #OASPA2025 today… (wait for Malavika’s session later!)

As the slide highlights, these journals have limited international visibility. We need to fix that: Kazuhiro Hayashi acknowledges that Japan might be in a good position to start or lead ‘something different.’

Great to see the breadth of China’s involvement in the open access landscape, with both successes and challenges. #OASPA2025

Our very own @rschrobuk.bsky.social kicking off the panel “Policy in progress around the world: the role of funder mandates on a 100% OA future.” Looking forward to the discussion!

Hannah Hope considers different facets of openness, building on the discussion document published by OASPA here: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

Kudos to @stephenpinfield.bsky.social for developing the underlying model! #OASPA2025

Very interesting reflection: Some (OA) journals exist not to be read, but to demonstrate output.

Day two is starting at #OASPA2025 and the hybrid tech is working! 👌🏼
September 23, 2025 at 7:08 AM
Cameron Neylon asked hard questions to publishers regarding the complexity of transitioning from hybrid to 100% open access. Two panellists discussed challenges around transparency: “Are we spending money on things that matter to researchers and readers? How do we best communicate that?” #OASPA2025

Nice approach to use generative AI for multilingualism and discovery presented by Szilvia Maróthy at #OASPA2025.

Just had a fantastic chat and walk with James Parry in sunny Leuven, talking about all things research integrity. Looking forward to the first session at the OASPA conference in about an hour!
