New paper provides more in depth proof of how and why ML emulators can outperform the model or data they were trained on. The inductive bias of the architecture choice can overcome the errors introduced by coarsening and discrete numerical solvers.

Any of my experienced MPAS users...do you know why an initialization over the ocean would produce blank (fill value) meteorological fields? Would it be tied to surface physics/fluxes from the ocean? I am having a hard time understanding why ERA5 met fields would not be replicated in MPAS.

This is just awful. Heart goes out to the students who just had their jobs/careers/degrees pulled out from under them
They are really planning to go through with these cuts at Nebraska, despite recommendations not to. Unbelievable.

IMO, the proposed bill to end the shutdown to me puts NOAA in a state of limbo til Jan. 30 with little hope for clarity even then. I breakdown my admittedly pessimistic interpretation of the situation and recap the competing admin and Congressional visions for NOAA: https://tinyurl.com/49dhaf56
