This time of year always reminds me of Milou. A Pyrenean rescue from Washington State, we brought her first to North Carolina, and from there home to Glasgow. Smart as a whip, hard as nails and the most affectionate dog ever. Really, you would wake up face to face. A braw lassie much missed.

Assembling a large piece of furniture this morning, and a sweaty 45mins into the estimated 30min assembly time my wife pulled out this modern classic from the Marriage Tester Hit Parade. ‘Well, there’s nothing in the online reviews suggesting it would be hard to assemble.’

I know I'm a fairly big fellow, and combined with my generally unkempt appearance I can sometimes make people in front of me at the ATM a little nervous. In order to allay their fears and show them I'm not a threat, I find it helps to give them a gentle kiss on the neck.

Your annual reminder that the most revealing difference between Irish and Scottish Gaelic is definitely in the words for December: Mí na Nollag (Month of Christmas) in Ireland, and An Dubhlachd (the Blackness) in Scotland. So once again may I wish you all a lovely Blackness.
