Dropped religion in ‘98 (at 48) after 4 years of Sewanee’s Ed for Ministry. Dark time. Existential moment when dad passed in ‘02. Realized that I had to work with my mind. Began Buddhist meditation practice in ‘06. I’m definitely a spiritual person but I don’t believe in magic. Life is big enough.

I struggle to use the word “hope” because it risks becoming implicit aversion — and thereby suffering. If I hope for anything it’s the faith to stay present, to witness, and be a point of compassion, to keep my seat, to simply stay & to act with intelligence. Thank you @joanhalifax.bsky.social
