When you have to add things to the symbols of patriotism, like 'refugees welcome' it's because those symbols of patriotism absolutely do not send out the same message alone.

Not opposite ends, but how aligned they are I can't say. US left is to the right of many other left-wing parties around the world.

Katy is nominally left of centre (publicly endorsing Obama, Clinton, Biden & Harris) but she did openly vote for a more conservative candidate in a mayoral election in LA (former Republican who defected to Democrats).
Trudeau is similarly left of centre, on paper.
