I haven't been able to get out into nature for a few days, so it was very kind of nature to pay me a visit instead. This lovely small tortoiseshell flew in the door of my bedroom earlier.

Tormentil on the path up to Scarr, Co. Wicklow. This flower is thought to get its name from the Latin for pain, as it was seen as a healing plant. For more facts about Ireland's wildflowers, Zoë Devlin's fantastic wildflowersofireland.net is a great resource, as are her books. #wildflowerhour

Crane fly (daddy long legs), Dún Laoghaire. Known as 'snáthaid an diabhail' ('the Devil's needle') or 'Pilib an gheataire' ('Philip of the rush'/'skinny Philip') in Irish. Not sure where the 'Philip' comes from, anyone?
