But to make a great film adaptation you have to be innovative, fuck things up, be fearless. Most of the great movie musicals are originals, or from another time. Maybe there was a way with Wicked. Splitting the story was a commercial success but really neutered the sequel.

Pop stage musical adaptations are basically concert films. Music videos strung together. Which, if you nail the performers and dazzle with some effects, you can win over fans. Wicked is massive and will spawn plenty of theater kids…
