Bevond that, the federal government agreed to cancel the planned regulatory 'cap" on emissions from the oil and gas sector, the industry responsible for the largest share of greenhouse gas pollution in Canada. Ottawa is also suspending its national Clean Electricity Regulations - which are designed to reduce emissions from power production after 2035 - in Alberta alone. and commits to permanently removing them in the province if there is an agreement as planned on a stronger industrial carbon price for Alberta.

The senator should brush up on constitutional law. The Charter does not mention "safe and discrimination-free" public facilities or "community standards.' It does state that: "Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: (a) freedom of conscience and religion; (b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; (c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and (d) freedom of association,."'

If Western countries do proceed with formal recognition of a Palestinian state, it would be more than just a symbolic loss for Israel. The message to the entire Middle East would be clear: radicalism and armed aggression, not diplomacy, will get results.

How the university handled dispersing the encampment in the spring drew widespread criticism. One night, counterprotesters attacked the pro- Palestinian encampment, throwing traffic cones and firing pepper spray. The fighting that continued for hours, injuring more than a dozen people, before police stepped in. The next day, after hundreds defied orders to leave, more than 200 people were arrested. During the 2024 protests at UCLA, at least 15 pro-Palestinian protesters were injured, and the tepid response by authorities drew criticism from political leaders as well as Muslim students and advocacy groups.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, then, can no longer justify including fossil fuel projects among his infrastructure goals. This includes liquefied natural gas plants, the Northern Gateway oil pipeline to the Pacific coast, and carbon sequestration projects (which most climate experts agree are industry greenwashing). Indeed, the responsible thing to do after this advisory opinion would be for all subsidies for the oil and gas sector to be phased out, including industry-specific tax breaks.

The CMHC has the largest transfer, so it will be asked to plan for the largest cut, worth $955 million annually at peak. The corporation insures residential mortgages, and that will remain unchanged - because that's funded by premiums. But the CMHC also administers affordable-housing programs for the feds, worth $6.4 billion in 2025-26. It's these programs that will likely suffer almost $1 billion in cuts. Half of the money goes to "assistance for housing needs," which largely means affordable housing for First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities.
