“No evidence the intent went beyond freeing slaves” — the framers of the amendment openly stated that it would grant citizenship to the children of Chinese immigrants. It’s in the Congressional record. Cited extensively in Wong Kim Ark. These aren’t obscure sources, especially for law professors.

I think it's important to just treat these guys as engaged in a conspiracy against the Republic and the Constitution.
What's most galling is Wurman and Barnett aren't stupid. They both know exactly how dishonest this is. Whatever their motives, and I don't really care, they're not doing scholarship in any of this. They're willful liars abusing their credentials in an aid of a lawless attack on fundamental rights.
The evidence is the text. All you have to do is read the Constitution.

i feel like we have this dynamic where conservative constitutional “scholars” just like lie about the plain textual meaning of the reconstruction amendments while liberal scholars are doing the john ganz scrapbook tweet in response
This isn’t a difference of opinion. Ilan Wurman and Randy Barnett are straightforward liars.

The unit cost of each Hellfire missile is ~$100k btw. That not even taking into account at all the expense of flying the mission, the pay of operators, fuel, etc etc. That’s why this is so degrading: it is for nothing. Nothing at all. They are so many more Robert Sanchez’s than there are Hellfires.
By the way this is why I know they’re lying when they say they knew who was on the boats and they’re all on a military list. The US military had somehow built a dossier on Robert Sanchez, the boat pilot living in a cinderblock house and earning $100 a month? He was next on the kill list after Osama?
Everyone seems to have forgotten but the AP actually went to Venezuela and found some of these men. They aren’t terminator-like cartel warriors, ready to give their life to ship kilos. They’re random dudes from small towns - bus drivers, fishermen - recruited for a payday. apnews.com/article/trum...

I think the time to couch this kind of thing in "I don't think there will be legal consequences" is over. I think it is actively detrimental to the actual task, which is fighting the kind of extended campaign that will lead to those consequences. That campaign may lose, but why envision failure?
I don't think the administration's murder of folks that happen to be on "drug-boat"-ish vessels will lead to much in the way of legal consequences but everyone who objects should still expend every effort to make that happen. Giving up would be as big a betrayal of the rule of law.

One of the goals is to get elected Dems to constantly say they are unleashing violence against anyone and must be stopped. Anger should turn into investigations, impeachment, defunding, an end to unanimous consent, no votes on Trump nominees

TOM COTTON: That didn't come up in my briefing

WELKER: Are you comfortable having the US target a boat that you're not sure is heading to the US?

I didn't think anyone could make the Nuzzi fiasco interesting, but @aselrod.bsky.social found a way to do it:
I wrote about the Olivia Nuzzi saga and how it reflects the voyeurism and indignity that drives so much of our media—social and otherwise.

This is an essay about elite excess, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and the crisis of our democracy.

The lurid details of Olivia Nuzzi's transgressions and the popularity of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives derive from the same culture of voyeurism.

The stench of absolute fucking faithlessness and oathbreaking from this regime is something it will take us the rest of my life to scrub off and atone for.
Portrait of a great nation bespoiled by a hate-fueled, malignant regime: People who did everything right, followed all the rules, did all the work, passed the test, and then, at a celebration, humiliated, pulled out of line, citizenship yanked at the last minute.

5. FWIW, that's also why, if the pro-Constitutional Democracy factions of the U.S. political order ever get the trifecta, they can't wait to pass their reforms. They can't spend time hashing them out in committee. They need prêt à passer legislation.

4. Indeed, you also need to shift politics *within* the party coalition.

Think about how the Liberals abandoned electoral reform in Canada. Real change is politically risky. It's easy for your opponents to demagogue. It's easy for your elected officials to balk.
