Given the current climate in the US, we found these monuments particularly compelling & apt. They represent religious minorities, immigrants, LGBT, artists, political dissidents, disabled, mentally ill, & other "undesirables" who were forceable removed by a bigoted & hateful administration.
Five monuments to the Beer and Oppenheimer family, several of whom were able to escape Germany. Three monuments to the Sommer family.

Sometimes the people they represent were lucky and were able to escape Germany, like the Kahn family (left). Others, like members the Kaufmann family (right), were murdered in concentration camps like Auschwitz.

Today @michaelbyrum.bsky.social & I took in some #historysky in Heidelberg. One of the darker parts of which was learning about the Stolpersteine or "Stumbling Stones".

Stolpersteine are a memorial project designed to remember those removed/killed by Nazis in WWII. You can see an example here:
