Mahomes has 77 pass attempts this season under 1.5 seconds. The next closest quarterback (Rodgers) has 49. Mahomes himself had 69 all of last season; he's well beyond that this season, and we still have four more games to play. By consistently tagging running plays with pass routes, the Chiefs take advantage of Mahomes' lightning-quick release and high football IQ. But such an approach comes with costs. To run RPOs at this rate, the Chiefs have to spend most of their time in shotgun, with 62.4% of the Chiefs' running back carries this season coming from that formation. That limits the menu of concepts Kansas City can run. With the running back to one side of the quarterback, opposing defenses can more readily predict which direction the run is hitting. Running from the shotgun with RPOs also limits the inclusion of the wide receivers in the blocking scheme, further decreasing the complexity for opposing defenses. The healthiest running games right now (Bears, Rams, Bills, Lions) don't just get under center but also get their receivers into the core of the formation and ask them to dig out safeties. Some guys are truly impactful blockers (Puka Nacua, Tyrell Shavers). Some are more willing than impactful (Jameson Williams, Rome Odunze). But schematically, putting the wide receiver in the scheme forces cornerbacks to get into the run fit, read things out, take on blocks and make tackles. It's a win for the offense. The Chiefs do not have receivers or tight ends who can block well in space; even future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce has always struggled in this particular part of his game. To get to their screen and RPO game, the Chiefs have to play receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and tight end Noah Gray, who do not create stress as actual receivers.

A couple weeks ago I wrote this about Browns tight end Harold Fannin because he was checking all the metrics boxes. All he needed was a full route participation rate, which he got in Week 13 and 14.

I say let him cook.
Harold Fannin (CLE) There is a scenario in which Fannin becomes a legendary NFL tight end, the kind you tell your kids about even if you're a weirdo who doesn't play fantasy football. Coming off the single greatest tight end college season in history, Fannin is checking every single box as an elite pass-catching tight end in the miserable Cleveland offense. Last week against the Raiders, with Shedeur Sanders drawing his first start, Fannin drew a target on a whopping 43 percent of his pass routes. He ran a route on 67 percent of the Browns' drop backs while David Njoku was stuck at 27 percent -- usage that could suggest the Browns are ready to see what they have in their young players for 2026 and beyond. Fannin through Week 12 is tied with Dalton Kincaid for the highest targets per route run (TPRR) among tight ends (27 percent). Fannin's 1.75 yards per route - ranking 16th among tight ends — speaks to the inefficiency of the Browns

Huge surprise that Shedeur Sanders has been sacked on 11 percent of his pressures from Week 12-14, the 11th lowest rate among 38 qualifying QBs. I think it makes him a viable starter in a league desperate for viable starters.
Shedeur Sanders keeps giving ‘em something to talk about. Say what you will about the young man: He knows entertainment. It was another Sunday where some of Sanders’ biggest plays were made by his pass catchers after the catch, but only some of them. It was Sanders who hit Jerry Jeudy in stride on an intermediate crosser for a 60-yard score. It was Sanders who made the Titans pay for dropping seven back into coverage late, picking them apart and nearly tying the game. These, of course, are low bars to clear, but many thought even that wouldn’t be possible for the fifth-rounder. I certainly thought it would be impossible for Sanders to take “only” six sacks through three starts. Hitting big plays more than expected and avoiding negative ones much more than expected, Sanders has earned the right to start the final four games of the season. Where it goes from there is anybody’s guess.

Tyler Shough and the down-unfathomably Saints get their crack at the pass-funnel Tampa defense this week and everything will go according to plan, per the analytics. I’m kidding, of course. With a team as awful as the Saints, best-laid plans go haywire in a hurry. This is my way of telling you, funnel-defense enthusiast, that I cannot be held responsible for how you deploy Saints players in Week 14. Please don’t sue me. The Bucs have faced a 62 percent neutral pass rate this season; only the Broncos and Jaguars have seen a higher neutral pass rate against them. Bucs opponents since Week 9 have a 65 percent neutral pass rate, with six of the past seven teams to play Tampa going well over their expected pass rate. The Saints in Week 8 against these Bucs were a whopping 17 percent over their expected pass rate, as Spencer Rattler melted down and Shough got his chance under center for New Orleans. The Saints had 51 pass attempts in that game and eight non-QB rushes. They passed against the pass funnel. Imagine that.

Feels like every liberal SCOTUS dissent is a thinly veiled emergency declaration at this point.

American prosperity and security depend on the development and promotion of competence. Competence and merit are among our greatest civilizational advantages: where the best Americans are hired, promoted, and honored, innovation and prosperity follow. Should competence be destroyed or systematically discouraged, complex systems that we take for granted—from infrastructure to national security to education and research—will cease to function. Should merit be smothered, America’s historic advantages in science, technology, industry, defense, and innovation will evaporate. The success of radical ideologies that seek to replace competence and merit with favored group status would render America unrecognizable and unable to defend itself. At the same time, we cannot allow meritocracy to be used as a justification to open America’s labor market to the world in the name of finding “global talent” that undercuts American workers.
