“what if Symbolic-era Death played black metal”

All Powers of Darkness' beauty is that it's what it says on the box: battle-ready and macabre black metal. It adheres to the tried-and-true Hellenic formula, with all the pageantry that entails, and luckily, that level of musical enthusiasm is evergreen.

Innumerable Forms continue to mine the heart-wrenching capabilities of death metal riffs on their third LP.

Though a screamo album at its heart, Under a Gilded Sun exists through the mediums of skronky death metal and power electronics. The emotionality crucial to screamo is unencumbered here, despite receiving a facelift.

Following up their 2024 release, one of Rolling Stone's best metal albums of the year FYI, Unholy Altar return with crude black metal that hunkers down on attitude. It's raw and ugly, but not overwhelming with speed or angularity.

By balancing an unearthly atmosphere with tasty riffs and synths, Selk'nam proves to be quite charming, in his own haunted and misanthropic way. This is black metal that doesn't overdo itself. Everything is well portioned and never falls over its feet.

More lo-fi black metal, albeit taken in a different direction. Cthonica play war metal that's never been touched by daylight. It leans into the noisiness of lo-fi production and toys with it, though never disrupting what's punishing and ceaseless.

Fell Omen's 2nd album of the year slightly improves the shoddy guitar tone that damaged his debut album. It's not a big overhaul, but it makes his jaunty, punkish, and extremely lo-fi black metal easier on the stomach.

Austin Lunn grants a formal release to songs that have sat on his shelves for 15 years. But, in more exciting news, he's also releasing a folk album that heavily recalls Scars II, his record that should get more love than it does.

The third Blackbraid album arrives this week, and while I'm not entirely sold on them because they've yet to distinguish themselves enough to justify the hype, the pre-release tracks have been tight. I wish this was a bit dingier. Maybe that'd do the trick.

How many melodies does black metal need? Finistère, in their tongue of speaker-destroying mixes, answer that with, "As many will fit on tape."

On their first record since 2018, Malthusian deliver death metal steeped in mire. The Summoning Bell is a murky take on what Morbid Angel built towards, with expansive tracks centered around constantly evolving riffs.

Crypt Sermon's last album was shockingly good and their new EP contains cuts that didn't make it to the record. I will not say no to more mystical (and yes, the following must be written in all caps) DOOM METAL.

@jtextreme.bsky.social left a pleasant comment on Feral Lord's BC page. That's high praise. Alternatively, if you like intricate, lo-fi black metal that refuses to stop (these guys don't "take 5"), this shit is for you.

Given the title, I thought this album would've been more meatheaded. Instead, Plasmodulated deliver fundamentally solid and slightly existential death metal. The kicker is that their guitars are uptuned so it doesn't sound like a cave orgy.

Sea Mosquito's second album is psychedelic black metal that pursues a purpose and doesn't fold in on itself. It's artful and enchanting, yet knows better than to test your patience.

I've got an interview going up with Toby Driver soon that goes into more detail about this record, but put simply, it's incredibly thought-provoking anti-AI art. Sounds like nothing else.

The big one out this week. @gonemage.bsky.social blesses everything he touches. In this case, it's brutal tech death. I'm not a regular with this stuff, but Garry does it with flair and Grade A mixing.
