Maybe they feel justified because they buy their own revisionist fantasy that the 2019 protests were a foreign plot to overthrow China. But at a time when you really need to rebuild the public's trust in you, treating good-faith charity as a possible vehicle for sedition is not how you do that. 5/5

But when a tragedy of this scale strikes and the grassroots response is this big, the last thing any govt should do is hinder that response, to include treating sincere volunteers as potential national security threats, which amplifies the public resentment they're trying to keep under control. 4/5

GovHK is clearly nervous about the public organising effectively and quickly to get things done outside of govt channels. The fact that everyone's angry and demanding answers about the govt's ability/willingness to crack down on corruption is probably making them even more nervous. 3/5

I mean, if you're looking at the impressive and heartwarming grassroots initiatives to help fire victims and your first thought is, "But what if they're secretly organising a colour revolution?!" then you're showing where your priorities lie – and it's not with the ppl who need help. 2/5
