After a long, comfortable silence in N’s arms, Uzi noticed him beginning to fidget, his eyes darting to the over hang of the Spire next to them as though in anticipation of something. Naturally, her own eyes trained on the space, trying to detect any movement, but there was nothing – nobody there. “Uh… everything okay?” she asked lightly, feeling N startle slightly at the sound of her voice. “Oh, yeah, yeah! Sorry, I was just… thinking.” “Again? I thought we established that was dangerous?” Uzi teased, and N laughed, squeezing her around her midriff as he nuzzled into her hair. “Hm, yeah, you’re probably right,” he mumbled, his voice muffled by her locks. “I should probably do more and think less, shouldn’t I?” Uzi silently wondered to herself about his inclination to overthink everything. It was probably a trauma thing, she thought. He’d been forced to walk on eggshells for most of his known life; both at the manor and under J’s command. The simplest slip up could result in terrifying consequences… Robo-God, it was no wonder he was so deeply methodical about every little thing - he had to be, for the sake of his own survival. …And habit was a hard thing to break. “Hey, N? You know I’ll like… never hurt you or anything, right?” Uzi asked tentatively, nestling against his chest. “If you make any little mistakes or whatever. I promise I won’t yell at you, or throw things at you, or lock you outside. It’s okay. You don’t have to worry about doing anything wrong. You’re safe now.” ‘Oh Robo-Christ, I sound like an idiot,’ a part of her brain muttered. ‘He’s going to think I’m so weir-’ N’s chest trembled slightly and he shifted to tuck his knees up around her, bringing her as close to him as physically possible. One, great, large paw found her hand, fingers slipping under her palm to curl with tender care around her digits, while the other rested against the back of her head, smoothing there in slow, rhythmic circles. ‘Oh,’ Uzi thought blankly, as her visor glowed like the setting sun. ‘Never mind.’ “I-I… yeah,” he finally said with a slight wobble in his voice. “I know. Hearing it is nice though. What made you come out with that?” Uzi was a little too distracted by the feeling of being completely enveloped in his embrace to come up with anything coherent. “I… you just… I don’t know, ugh,” she buried her face in in the fur of his collar. “I-I don’t want you to feel like you have to tread carefully around me or whatever. I want you to like…” she paused, trying to find the right words. Then she tilted her head to speak a little clearer. “…I want you to feel safe around me.” “Uzi…” N’s limbs relaxed slightly, and he shuffled to look her in the eye. The hand that had been playing lightly with her fingers now moved to cradle her cheek. “You have never once, in all the time I’ve known you, ever made me feel unsafe… okay?” He brushed a thumb tenderly against her casing, and Uzi could feel herself melting with each passing second. “If anything, I feel at my safest when I’m with you.” With a little scoff, Uzi’s own hand rose to hold his own against her cheek. “G-Gross… you’re so sappy,” she mumbled, but she couldn’t help the smile that worked onto her lips as she closed her eyes and nuzzled against his touch. She didn’t mind so much now, being intimate and vulnerable. At least not with N, and especially when it was clear that it brought him a great deal of comfort. It felt so nice to let her walls down, let herself trust him entirely. Even without looking, she could sense a brief instance of hesitation, before N willed himself to talk again. “Uzi… you like music right?” He asked softly, then before she could answer he laughed sheepishly. “Sorry, stupid question, I know you like music! I meant, uh… would you like to listen to some?” Uzi blinked her eyes open, a little surprised. “Oh! Uh… sure!”

I wrote up a lil' parsnip soup recipe for my friends a while back. :) Very nice comfort dish and also versatile! 🍲
Dee’s Honey Roast Parsnip Soup 3 Parsnips 1 Potato 3 Cloves of Garlic 1 litre of Vegetable Stock 3 tablespoons of Double Cream Honey Salt, Pepper, Mixed Herbs, Parsley, Paprika, Onion Granules (To taste) Peel and slice the parsnips into evenly sized pieces, and fry in a large saucepan with a bit of oil. Stir occasionally. Once the parsnips begin to go a golden colour, add the garlic, and fry for a further 5 minutes. Peel and chop your potatoes into similar sized pieces to the parsnips, and add to the mix. Stir in and let cook for another 2 minutes, before adding your boiled vegetable stock. Let simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes. Test the vegetables with a knife. If they are soft enough for the knife to pierce through easily, they are cooked. Let cool completely before transferring to a blender or food processor. (Blender makes a smoother soup.) Blitz until the soup is the preferred consistency. Return to the saucepan on a low heat. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, mixed herbs, onion granules and parsley to taste. Add about 3 tablespoons of double cream, and honey until the soup is your preferred sweetness. To serve, add a swirl of cream on your soup and a sprinkle of parsley.

Lizzy had been through her fair share of terrifying ordeals, but she’d always taken things in her stride. When her best friend had developed an insatiable craving for oil, and an even bigger appetite for revenge, Lizzy had quite happily gone along with it. One might have even called her an accomplice in the murder of each potential prom queen, even if she hadn’t exactly done the deeds herself. She’d seen the leftover carnage, though… it was enough to turn any drone’s stomach. Still, she carried on, numbing herself to Doll’s dwelling which grew grizzlier each passing day. Then, of course, there was the whole camping incident. Lizzy had watched her friends ripped apart and devoured by a monstrous Uzi, and been snatched ruthlessly into the air by a burning, violet symbol around her neck. She had almost become a victim in that oil-bath herself, at the whim and mercy of her possessed classmate, until she had been rescued by the unusual knight in shining camp gear that was V. Against all odds, Lizzy somehow lived through the sick, twisted, teen-slasher movie that had become of that night… but anxious fingers still frequented the alien-marking shaped scar that now circled her neck. It served as a reminder. Things wouldn’t – couldn’t ever be the same again. Even when the world ended, Lizzy faced it with total nonchalance. As Copper-9 burned and crumbled around her, little cracked her composure. She had never really feared death. Maybe she’d just become so desensitised to it - it had surrounded Lizzy for her whole life in some form or another, and besides, could you really die if you never felt alive to begin with? The prospect had only recently begun to faze her as life shifted in unexpected ways. She was happier now… her core felt lighter, less numb and heavy with the weight of expectation placed upon her. She felt loved, truly loved instead of the superficial reverence she had grown used to from her peers. But that also meant she also had something to lose now.

As the plate between them was practically scraped clean, Uzi leaned back with languid satisfaction, resting her weight on one arm behind her as she picked at the pieces of metal in her fangs. She could feel the rolling pressure of a purr rumbling softly in the back of her throat now as lethargy took hold, her body growing heavier by the second as her meal settled in her stomach. A soft little chuckle sounded across from her as N tidied the plate away to the side and shuffled forward. “Aw Uzi, you’re not falling asleep already are you? It’s still so early!” Uzi cracked an eye open at him, and with a drowsy smile, wordlessly let herself flop forwards, crawling over to relax her whole weight against his chest. N wrapped his arms around her, chest warbling with the fondest chuckle as he cradled her. “Aww, hehe. Hey there buddy,” he said as he swayed her too and fro slowly. With a small huff, Uzi clambered up him clumsily to rest her head against his shoulder, her fingers clinging to the fabric of his jacket. “Hi,” she mumbled, rubbing her cheek against his fluffy collar. “Thanks, for like… cooking and everything. It was really nice.” “Hey… any time. I really enjoy doing these kinds of things anyway, so it’s nice I get to do it for you now.” She felt his tail curl around her, the canister of his stinger resting on her legs. He sighed softly down her back. “You know, it’s so funny. I kind of forgot that I knew how to cook before I met you.” The foggy haze in Uzi’s CPU cleared slightly, as thoughts of N’s life before their chance encounter blew through her like the cold winds around them. She pulled back just enough to look at him, resting against the palms supporting her back. “How is your memory lately? Do you remember anything else from like… y’know. Earth?” N hummed thoughtfully. “Bits and pieces keep coming back to me. A lot of it is still kind of fuzzy,” something in N’s demeanour changed, a flicker of something a little less certain.

A piece of prose on a green background. It reads: “Here,” Lizzy stood on her tiptoes to pass up the mug, and V took it before she disappeared again behind the metal ledge. Still, her tail dangled there, swaying gently back and forth, and in a moment of half-asleep, deep affection, Lizzy raised a hand and traced her fingers gently over the glass of the canister. She guided it closer, pressed her lips to it’s smooth surface delicately, and felt the gentle warmth radiating from the acid within. She didn’t expect what happened next, of course. Her reactions were far too foggy. And so when two clawed hands suddenly closed around her arms, she squeaked in alarm as she was suddenly thrust upwards into the air, feet ripped from the ground beneath her. She found herself dazed and yet quickly enveloped in warm, familiar arms, and she relaxed into it instinctively. V was still trembling. Lizzy could hear the cooling fans in V’s head whirling uselessly as they tried to fight back against the rapid overheating. She reached up and combed anxious fingers through the back of V’s hair, as though it might soothe her discomfort even a little, and V squeezed her tighter, like she was afraid Lizzy would suddenly slip through her claws and into the void if she didn’t hold onto her. “Hey, c’mon, drink your oil, before your head combusts,” she said, though her voice came out too gentle to have any sort of authority behind it. V mumbled weakly into Lizzy’s shoulder, a clear indicator that she didn’t want to move. Lizzy sighed reluctantly, squirming in V’s grip until she could reach over and curl a finger around the mug’s handle, dragging it closer. It seemed like V had spilt some of its contents as she had lifted it up into the fort, a black puddle pooling around its base and trickling back down towards the ledge. Only about two-thirds of it remained inside the mug now, and so when she lifted it she did so as cautiously as she could to avoid wasting anymore of the precious liquid. “V…” She tapped its side carefully against V’s hip, as though the sensation might stir her from whatever dazed disassociation she had found herself in, and the tension in V’s arms finally eased enough that Lizzy could pull back and look at her. It was so scary to see someone usually so strong look so broken and frail. Her eyes darted around, trembling and manic still, like she was anticipating an ambush, and yet at the same time, tired lines under her half lidded eyes and the dim flicker of the bulbs on her headband betrayed her deep fatigue. Lizzy offered the mug again a little more urgently, and V’s claws clinked against its surface lethargically, as though her brain was struggling to comprehend and process what she was seeing at first. Then, finally, she retracted them and her hands reappeared, and she hovered them close to Lizzy’s own. When Lizzy pressed the mug into her hands, V almost dropped it with shaking fingers, and Lizzy had to place her hands hastily over V’s to steady them as she lifted it to her lips to sip at the oil inside. She could feel the tremble ease after a few seconds, and when she paused and lowered the mug again, she seemed a little more lucid, the burning heat radiating from her body slowly dissipating. Lizzy reached out and brushed a small trickle of oil from the corner of V’s mouth with her thumb, and V hummed softly in fond appreciation. “Better?” “Yeah,” V’s voice sounded weak and hoarse, like her voice box had been crammed full of sandpaper. “I’m… I’m sorry.” “For what?” V was quiet, staring down at the mug in her hands as she tapped her finger tips against its ceramic. “I-I didn’t… this isn’t…” She shook her head with a tired sigh, dragging a hand down her visor. “God… I hoped you’d never have to see me like this.”

It might have been a bit of a grizzly sight for other drones, but Uzi was used to it. Using her new utensil, she tapped it playfully against the glass of N’s visor, and the fangs vanished behind a softer, almost shy smile. Wasting no more time, Uzi jammed the fork into the mix of wires, twirled it so that it wrapped around the prongs, and almost unhinged her jaw in her enthusiasm to try the meal before her. No sooner had her lips closed around the metal than did she feel giddy sparks flying in her CPU, fans whirring dizzily as her processors overloaded with delectation so intense she thought she might swoon. It was heavenly, the perfect balance of flavours; the savouriness of metal met the sweetness of the oil in an intimate embrace, complimented by just the right amount of tang from the battery acid lingering on the cell’s shavings. Tears now prickled at the corners of her eyes as a strange mix of emotions overcame Uzi – joy at the sensation, and yet also sorrow at having missed out on this for all her life, and she hastily shovelled another mouthful into her waiting maw, relishing each and every bite and the way its taste danced on her tongue. ‘Oh sweet Mother of Code, I need to marry this drone.’ “N,” her voice came out somewhere between a desperate gasp and a rumbly growl. She could feel the oil trickling down the corners of her lips. “You have to teach me how to make this.” N only laughed sweetly, his tail swaying gleefully back and forth behind him. He’d barely touched their food yet, he seemed rather transfixed on watching her eat instead. “Oh, I just kinda threw it together, y’know?” He chimed, his voice teetering on the edge of a laugh, as he reached across with a napkin to tenderly wipe her cheek. “Although seeing how much you like it… maybe I should have made more!”

“Hey… It still looks great without the candle,” the backs of her fingers caressed lightly up and down his casing, and N’s eyes softened a great deal, his tail relaxing to a gentle wag. “It’s like… super cute.” It seemed to bolster N’s confidence a little. He stood a bit straighter with a bright grin, and bounced slightly on the heels of his feet. “Well, we should go enjoy it then, right? It would be rude for me to keep you standing here any longer!” He did an excited little hop towards the blanket, then twirled back around dramatically in a way that seemed to denote him getting into character, tucking up one arm in front of him while the other folded behind his back. “Table for two, miss?” Uzi couldn’t help it, she burst out with a loud rumble of laughter and reached out when he offered her his arm, letting herself be led towards the blanket. “God, you’re such a dork. There’s not even a table here.” “Aw, c’mon Uzi. You just have to use your imagination a little,” N chuckled. “Oh, one moment! Let me just…” He strode quickly to the blanket’s edge and mimed pulling out a chair for Uzi, and another chorus of giggles erupted from her. She rolled her eyes, but her heart was overflowing with too much affection to feign aloofness as he stood there so politely expectant. So she indulged him, bumping his arm playfully with her shoulder before pretending to sit down on the non-existent seat. She knew he’d catch her. She felt his fingers slip under her arms to gently lower her down onto the blanket, dropping to one knee as he did, and she felt his lips peck her fringe lightly before he scampered up and over to the opposite, invisible ‘chair’. N pulled it out, then slumped far less gracefully down with a clunk, crossing his legs and scooting closer to her, his whole body wiggling in excitement. Between them lay a single, large plate heaped high with what appeared to be jumpstart cables and wires of all colours and thicknesses.

Uzi shuffled into the room and complied, sitting on a creaky stool in front of a dressing table that wore dust like a great, grey jacket. Clearly, Nori had customised some long dead human’s unit for her own use, though it had seen better days in her absence. Its indigo paint was flaking and cracked on all sides, revealing flecks of a dull corporate grey coat beneath, and the many stickers marking it haphazardly were worn and faded; some peeling, others leaving nothing more than dried residue in their place. Uzi remembered faintly being fascinated by their bright colours once as a wobbly toddler … that was so long ago now. Nori scoffed irritably, wiping the cracked glass with her claw. “Can’t trust Khan to look after anything I left behind, Robo-Christ…” A smile twitched at Uzi’s lips, understanding the deeper context of her mother’s words. She reached out and more successfully swiped away the years of dirt, just enough to see their blurry reflections staring back at them. Nori nodded gratefully and patted the back of Uzi’s hand with her claw. Rarely did a comb touch Uzi’s hair. She’d always had far better things to do; projects to finish, places to be, and besides, it rarely ever tangled anyway. So, it was a strange sensation when she removed her beanie anxiously and felt plastic teeth pierce the purple strands and brush free the debris that had accumulated over the years. It was sort of nice. Calming. Uzi might have melted into the moment and lost track of time if it had been any other evening, but she couldn’t afford to let herself get distracted. Instead, she watched in the mirror as a ghostly brush hovered around her head, held by the spectral Solver symbol of her mother, who diligently scampered to and fro along the wooden surface-top, before she crawled up Uzi’s arm to her shoulder to more easily access the back of her hair. “I can’t wait to do this with actual hands,” she muttered, seemingly more to herself than Uzi. “It’s just… not the same."

“Y’know, I was talking with my mom earlier,” at that, N quirked his head curiously. “She said you called me beautiful, when you guys first met in the labs.” N’s cheeks flushed a brilliant yellow, and he chuckled shyly. “Aw… well, you know I think you’re beautiful,” he said quietly. “I’m pretty sure I tell you every day.” “Yeah… I know,” Uzi bumped her head gently against his chest, then twisted to rest her chin there, looking up at him impishly. “It’s just cute that you had a crush on me.” N blinked, stunned, then burst out with a laugh. “Wh- Uzi! Of course I had a crush on you – heck, I think I’ve probably had a crush on you since the day we met!” His voice rumbled with gleeful little chuckles, and Uzi’s core lightened, dancing to their tune. “Y’know, I’m pretty sure that’s kind of why we’re dating now? That’s so embarrassing,” Uzi teased, but when N’s eyes hollowed and his brow furrowed in concern she felt her CPU stall in panic and her mouth began to backpedal. “Wait, no, no, I did! I do! You’re like, the nicest, prettiest drone I’ve ever seen, of course I was all stupid about it and totally in love with-” Uzi bit her tongue, too embarrassed to finish the last part, but it was too late now to pretend the words hadn’t slipped so clumsily from her lips. She could feel N’s heartbeat increase, thumping against her neck and upper chest, and as his eyes softened, Uzi buried her face in the fur lining of his jacket, suddenly too self-conscious to handle his reaction. A finger so delicately brushed beneath her jaw, encouraging her gently to look back up at him, then his whole hand; a huge paw that had been designed to kill and destroy everything it touched, cradled her cheek with tender devotion.

So uh... I might have slipped and accidentally written the intro to a new fic. Inspiration is a mysterious mistress. It'll be a little while before this one sees actual work on it, but I am really REALLY excited for when I get to sit down with it!

Prose that reads as follows: There had been life here once, on Copper 9. Not just the drones that had found themselves here, scraping by and rebuilding a society in the ruins of their now extinct masters. No, long before them and the humans that had settled here, there had been true, organic life. Thriving ecosystems of flora and fauna. Native trees, and flowers, and the curious creatures that prowled and pranced between them. And then, upon the arrival of humankind, new species flourished on the planet’s temperate climate. The balance had always been tentative. Of course, it was anywhere in the galaxy where life clung onto existence, but the introduction of invasive species made things harder; shifted the tides and reshaped the landscape. Change was inevitable… it was a part of existence everywhere - but long had it been since the planet had seen such a rapid spread of chaos and the replacement of so many niches. But life endured, as it always had. A new status quo formed, and Copper 9 adapted to its new inhabitants. Then it all ended. The world withered and died, leaving only the echoes and husks of what once was. Broken bones and petrified wood littered the forests and cities, and in a startling instant the voices of billions of lifeforms were snuffed out. There was only deathly silence now. A inhospitable wasteland stretched out across all continents, and with the asbestos riddled snowstorm choking out the sun above, nothing could survive a place like this. Not now. Maybe never again. Only the robots remained now; the Workers and keybugs and other companions and tools humans had crafted. Alive, perhaps, but in a way so different from anything else that had existed here before. Sentient; thinking, feeling, but inorganic. Not alive in a familiar way. Continued from the last picture: Their world almost ended too. Another invasive species – a parasite, a plague had descended upon Copper 9 not long ago, and with their presence, the last lingering semblance of life had nearly been extinguished. But instead, against all odds, and with one Worker’s defiance in the face of annihilation, a new, peaceful balance was established. The world was calm again. Crumbling and dead, but at peace, as snow filled the scars left behind by years of genocidal mayhem. N had never seen what Copper 9 had looked like before the planetary core collapse. Surprisingly few photographs from before had survived the implosion, and those that had were of rather poor quality. It never stopped him from imagining though. He always painted a picture in his mind when he stared up at the brittle, frozen trees outside of the main city. Had the sky been blue, as it had been on earth? Had there been soft, green grass underfoot? What creatures had leapt from branch to branch out here, or burrowed beneath his boots searching for food? “What are you daydreaming about this time?” The voice startled him, and he blinked himself back into reality, into the present moment. Uzi was staring at him fondly with a quirk to her brow and a tilt of her head from a few feet away, hands buried deep in her backpack as she slipped out a flask of hot oil and set it steaming in the snowbank beside her.

A bitter, blustering wind beat the world outside the bunker, but it did little to dampen the spirits of the young drone now trudging through the thick, deep snow towards the macabre tower of corpses. Flecks of snowflakes melted at the touch of her casing, and then, when they emerged, the skin of her wings too, as she took rapidly to the sky. ‘Meet at the Spire’ had been a little vague, Uzi was beginning to realise. Did he mean the front entrance? Inside? At the peak? Sweeping down through the gales she landed amongst the old carcasses and remains littering the interior of the drone-made mountain. A black, sooty wreck was all the remained of their old ship now, and Uzi couldn’t help but bristle at the sight. It had been her home once. Not for long, of course, but still. And it had been N and V’s for far longer… she never really had asked how they felt about it’s destruction. It must have held a great deal of memories, although thinking on it she couldn’t imagine that many of them were happy. Kicking a metal rod, Uzi watched it roll across the ground and clink lightly against one of the twisted, gnarled legs of the ship, and it creaked miserably. She decided quite quickly that she didn’t want to spend any more time here; especially if N wasn’t around. It was too empty now. Too quiet. Soaring back out like a giant bat, Uzi curled through the air and spiralled her way up towards the Spire’s summit, staying close to its edge, until she let her feet carefully touch down to climb the final few feet herself. When she caught sight of a familiar lanky frame shuffling about in the moonlight, she felt her shoulders instantly relax. There he was… right there. Only then did she notice all the twinkling fairy lights around him, entwined around broken limbs, and the fake flower garlands dangling down from the overhang slightly above. A tartan picnic blanket lay in the centre of it all; he was kneeling on it with his back to her, tail flicking in agitation.

AIPT: Do you want this book/story to be a continuation of the series or an add-on instead? Does that distinction even matter? WK: I’d asked Glitch initially if they wanted this to be either of those, but they were very clear in wanting this to be the intro of Murder Drones to a larger comic reading audience with a straight-forward adaptation that hopefully could open the door for continuations with either these characters or the overall world.
