Hey! I'm Daniel, but everyone calls me Dee-Kej or DK.

Gamedev since late 2013, done mostly VR things at a few places.

Went solo mid-2024, but sometimes consult on other projects.

Expect mostly coherent ramblings about VR/XR, gamedev, and anime. 👋

Been silent here a bit due to dealing with a nasty cold that essentially knocked me out for the better part of two weeks.

More dev updates resuming shortly!

Obviously been playing Legends Z-A the past few days, and I really like it.

Yes I also feel a bit disappointed we don't get more of Kalos to explore, but the writing is genuinely funny at times, and the music + char designs are top notch 👌👌👌

They have an Electro Swing battle theme!!

We had a brainstorm about our UI yesterday evening, and while I'm not going to properly make that into proper setups yet, I wanted to check if I could setup our tech tree like we wanted.

And it looks like yes! (nodes are dynamically connected based on their prerequisite upgrades)

Getting this set up better, but now running into next problem; how do I enable sort of a dialognal line between the render target images. There has to be a masking thing of some sort, surely...?

Maybe in the material itself?

Starting to dabble with dual-view cameras for the dialogue system in Vending Machine Game (title TBD)

Still just trying stuff out, but honestly thought I'd have a harder time getting to even this point.

Getting back to writing blog posts! ✏️

It’s old content, a 4y.o twitter thread, lost when I fled the old place. I decided to bring it back to you.

Maybe you recall it? It was about stairs 🛕

Did a talk at my old uni yesterday as part of a 20th anniversary celebration for the games programme there, and happy to say that the kids are alright from what I can tell.

They're super talented and excited, but also aware about how the industry is at the moment. Can't wait to see what they'll do.

I think this is the first time I've seen a big indie hit take off and then getting recommended the devlogs for that same game on Youtube?

I was wondering when this would start to happen more broadly, given the increased amount of devs documenting their work like this.

Meta's fork of Unreal Engine gave you Application SpaceWarp (ASW), an excellent form of reprojection.

In UE 5.7, Epic introduces an OpenXR, headset-agnostic mobile reprojection method, and it's EXCELLENT.

Try it out:

It's been A WHILE since I drew... anything really, but as long as it's good enough for me to start modeling from, I guess it's fine 😆

My gut says that a straight-forward rig with shape keys for expressions is the way to go, but looking for more inspiration for ways to set things up that I haven't thought of.
Recently started to deal with one of the remaining big hurdles/unknowns for the game; character designs!

As I'm trying to capture the feeling of anime, I'm trying to find good examples of how others have succeeded with expressive/emotive 3D chars. If you know any good examples, throw them my way!

This was a good talk; resonated a lot with how I think about and approach game design!

Caught the stream just as the talk was ending this morning, but watched it through during the day.

Extra shoutout to the power and benefits of Fika!
