Bard is an awesome class for a first run. High Charisma attributes make it so your character can be the face of the party (you can usually swap to another character to speak to someone btw, if there's some benefit to it)
Also, bards are just fun as hell.

I hope you get a chance to play it - I think it's essential if you like older JRPGs. I see new games that drop in little references to it. I think it was also one of the first games (if not the first) to do New Game+

I guess I'll see how light it is once it's all loaded up. I haven't weighed it yet. It doesn't feel super heavy, but I'm also not particularly bothered by weight unless it's super heavy (I have a 9.5 lb five string bass that I play comfortably)

I'm a born and raised Oregonian, but my wife is from Michigan and to me it seems like this is also true of the Midwest. It seems very strange to me though!

There's an optional boss in SquareSoft's Super Mario RPG (1996) named Culex who is an homage to Final Fantasy, but maybe that's too tangential for this list.

I love this game, still have my old SNES cartridge but I also own it on Steam. It holds up really well because the pacing is perfect - you don't have to grind to level up, though there are opportunities if you want to grind, especially later in the game.
Also, the music is incredible.
