51. Ninja Gaiden II (NES) — I’ve always held this game in high esteem, yet considered NG1 more of an essential play. After revisiting, I feel vindicated about the 2nd part of that statement. It’s totally fine! Insanely difficult with great cinematics, it is pure Ninja Gaiden. Just less essential.

Just finished another one last night (Oracle of Seasons), so I updated the tiers. Gonna try to get Oracles of Ages knocked out next. (For 2026, I've got FIVE more on the backlog.)

50. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons — As these games go, it checks the boxes it needs to. And I can appreciate they tried to do something different with the mechanics and the double-release with OoA. I don’t think it advances things enough, and I disliked the roadblock-filled map. It’s fine.

49. Mega Man V (Game Boy) — The candy to get you in the door is the collection of brand-new bosses and settings, instead of the recycled material of the other GB titles. But it’s actually the level design and zigzagging story beats that make the game a worthwhile play.

So I’ve been writing reviews on the retro games I think everyone should play, and here we are at No. 50. Anyone got any thoughts/memories to share? davegladow.com/simcity-retr...

48. Mega Man IV (Game Boy) — I wouldn’t give the first three Mega Man Game Boy games a passing grade, but I think this one deserves one. The level design here is fairly strong.

47. Devil May Cry — Finally inspired enough to return to it after shelving it for two decades (originally because I found its lack of save points to be a dick-kicking waste of time), I have to say it is definitely its own kind of wackadoodle experience if you can power through.

46. Windjammers — It ain’t rocket science, but it doesn’t have to be. This is a fun time and worth circling back to, particularly if you’ve never experienced it before.

The Benevolent Dictator requested I dye my beard pink. I said I’d do it in October. It’s October. You’re welcome.

Army gonna bleed out the whole first quarter, as they are wont to do.

45. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood — Just the best Castlevania there is.

44. Castlevania — Spooky season gaming! I like this era of Castlevania games because you can get in and out in one night. Brevity can be good.

43. Mega Man III (Game Boy) — Conceptually, these games just bother me. Structurally, they make no narrative sense. But also, the remixing of previous MM powers, bosses, and stages is really just sort of irksome. Do. Not. Like.

42. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door — It’s a great game with a delightful, humorous script, and it very much deserves its golden reputation. Now, there are some things to quibble with, especially the late-game pacing and difficulty scaling. But It’s way more good than bad.

41. R-Type — Been a big fan for a long time, but I do think the difficulty, especially late, overdoes it a little. Despite that, it’s a classic, basically a must-play for anyone with any kind of fondness for shoot-em-ups.

Post a movie you like with a terrible rotten tomatoes score

Look, I’m not gonna fight anyone over this, but goddamn I’m entertained whenever I watch it. Plus, Halloween is coming up!

40. Half-Life 2 — FPS aficionados might argue the point, but I’m not sure a shooter has come along since that set the standard in the same way as this one did. The story, world building, and set pieces are superb, even 20 years later. It remains a banger.

Had some of the best pizza of my life today at Table 87 in Brooklyn. Great vibes and food, and an extremely potent frozen Negroni.

39. Mega Man II (Game Boy) — Much easier than Wiley’s Revenge, but perhaps its equal at being a narrative and level design mess.
