Thus a spatial code is transformed into 1000 receptor choices and glomerular targets. Lots more exciting data and mechanistic details (clonal lineage analysis, RA and heterochromatin manipulations, receptor dynamics in OSN differentiation, F1 hybrids) in our preprint!

4. This DV code includes ~250 spatially-varying genes (including many transcription factors and axon guidance genes), which act downstream of a retinoic acid gradient to influence OR choice; it also accurately predicts glomerular 3D positions, thereby coordinating maps in the nose and bulb

By sequencing millions of OSNs from 100s of animals combined with multiplexed in situs via MERFISH, we identify a transcriptional code (the "DV score") for epithelial position; this code predicts the stereotyped and unique spatial distribution for each OSN subtype, yielding a map with 1,000 peaks

Current models suggest each olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) randomly chooses 1 out of 1000 olfactory receptors (OR) to express, and that ORs are scattered across large regions of the nose. But the nose has a complicated (but beautiful) 3D organization, so its hard to know if there is a receptor map
