Lan Huan scrolls through Wei Ying’s profile, and the gentle tap of his finger against the screen shudders through Lan Zhan like the screech of a misplayed note. His whole body is tense, and he exhales slowly, working to unclench his jaw by degrees. “It says here,” Lan Huan says with characteristic good humour, “that he’s looking for fun.” He nudges Lan Zhan with the tip of his toe. “You could do with some fun in your life.” Lan Zhan could do with a new brother. “No,” he says, shifting out of Lan Huan’s range. “Thank you.” --- When his brother creates a dating profile for him, Lan Zhan doesn't expect to match with the most obnoxious vendor at the Farmers' Market. Wei Ying is looking for fun, Lan Zhan wants out of this mess, and Lan Huan just wants his brother to be happy. (farmer wwx, lonely businessman lwj, much mutual pining)

Compared to the absolute misery of a couple months ago, things are incredible—truly. It’s just that in the quiet of his house, when he cooks enough noodles for one, Lan Zhan finds himself wanting more. That’s always been Lan Zhan’s problem, wanting more. More time with his mother, more hours on the violin, more nights with Wei Ying. He’s never known how to want something halfway, to ease into his feelings. He hates that his brother was right, but once he’s forced to watch Wei Ying walk away night after night, he realizes he is lonely. Lan Huan does his best—kitschy lifestyle fads aside—but no lunchtime ramen meetup or C-drama watch party or impromptu walk in the park can make up for the emptiness that lingers when Wei Ying leaves just before bed, the heat of his body the only reminder that he was ever there at all.

Lan Zhan shoves the fruit back in his bag, fears of bruising or splitting the last thing on his mind. The bag sways, but Lan Zhan clamps it to his side. “So rough, Gege,” Wei Ying chides, walking a few steps to scoop up the second loquat. He holds it out with exaggerated care, his teeth just grazing the edge of his full lower lip. “Some things require gentle handling.” Lan Zhan fumbles the fruit into his bag, ears flushing as he pulls away. “Shameless,” he hisses through his mortification, spinning before he can do anything to make this worse. “Hey, hey!” Wei Ying calls, abandoning his stall in favour of tracking Lan Zhan through the steadily growing crowd. “I think that’s a little unfair—calling me shameless, when you’re the one who couldn’t keep your eyes off me.” Lan Zhan turns, only because he hopes it’ll shock Wei Ying into keeping his mouth closed. “I was,” he starts, panic and frustration twisting his words. His breath catches in this throat, choking off any chance at eloquence. “I didn’t—” “Think you’d get caught?” Wei Ying moves closer, and Lan Zhan feels like a cornered rabbit, paralyzed with a fear so intense that it borders on exaltation. Wei Ying must sense something, because he slows down, maintains some distance between the two of them. “You should have worn your cute little hat,” Wei Ying continues, eyes caught on the reddened tips of Lan Zhan’s ears. “It would have given you something to hide behind, made your spying a little easier.”

Now that wlw week is over, my brain has decided it’s on board to write my wlw wangxian fic 😩😩

Unruly brain aside, I’m having a great time writing swordswoman wwx who’s obsessed with angry mage lwj 🔥

Wei Wuxian spends the preparation time before her match imagining the look on Lan Wangji’s face when she wipes the floor with her champion. How her perfect brow will crinkle, how her full lips will tighten. She thinks about how her hands will clench, searching, betraying the impulse to take something and squeeze. It’s easy enough to picture, though she’s only seen it handful of times: when they’d first met, and Wei Wuxian had swiped a jar of the famed Emperor’s Smile out of the banquet hall and onto the grounds of the Cloud Recesses; again when she’d — with express invitation from Lan Xichen — wandered her way into the healing pond following a brutal physical demonstration from Gusu Lan’s weapons instructor; and finally, two nights ago, when Lan Wangji had arrived at Lotus Pier for the final round of the tournament and seemed horrified to find Wei Wuxian on the training grounds, panting and sweaty, instead of grovelling at the gates with the rest of the household. The sight of her storming away in her opulent robes, quietly furious, had stayed with Wei Wuxian for the night, taunting her as she’d tossed and turned, sweat beading on feverish skin and heart rattling against her ribs. The heat of it had settled in her gut, twisting, unrelenting even as she squeezed her body as compactly as possible, heels digging into her bed with an agitated flex.

Welcoming fall with a witchy fic that is all vibes, no plot. I wanted to write something short and fluffy, and ended up with 15k of a dark fairy tale about fear and family. 🍂🖤
