“People overcomplicate things. Pokémon don’t lie about what they are.”
“Use Foul Play!”

It was the first verbal command Kael issued this battle and without wasting any time Umbreon picked a new angle and ran to attack the blinded Oshawott.

Foul Play was an attack that grew stronger based on the opponents strength so Kael hoped to use Sushi’s Sword Dance against it.

In this position, Umbreon was hit with a spark of inspiration and leap forward aggressively, abruptly breaking the contact with Sushi, hoping to push it off balance while kicking up dirt in its face to blind it using Sand Attack.

“—Such a diverse move pool,” Kael thought as Sushi immediately went on the attack. Umbreon was quick to react, picking up its pace and swinging its body so that its tail met Sushi’s Scalchop.

Back turned to the Oshawott, Umbreon grimaced at the collision, pushing itself to try and overpower it. —

Kael watched Amaranth tuck herself behind Infini and couldn’t help thinking of his own Absol who is also slow to trust anyone who wasn’t him.

“Heh— my Absol’s the same way so I get it. Baby steps right,” he said offering his arm to Ama, slowly walking up to see if she’d move any closer to him.

Kael couldn’t help the small smile that slipped out as Amaranth tackled Infini over. Beside him, Umbreon took a step forward, wanting to join the dogpile until Kael’s hand gently settled on her back.

“You’re her safe space and it looks like she really wants you to know.”

letting Umbreon drag me down every flashy alley she sees.”

Umbreon puffed out a proud “breon,” before running back towards the Amaranth.

“It doesn’t have to be a whole tour, just a place or two would be fine. Umbreon doesn’t want to say goodbye to her new friend just yet.”

Umbreon followed behind, walking to Kael and bumping her head into his knee to signal a job well done before nudging her ankle as if egging him on.

“…Hey,” Kael began after a few moments, rubbing the back of his neck. “Would you mind showing us around? I figure a local guide is better than —

friend as Umbreon bumped her shoulder against the her.

“I’ve found that Pokémon are usually good judges of character when the decision’s theirs to make and I’m sure readjusting’s easier now that she has you.”

He had just met her, but there was a sureness like he had already seen enough to mean it.

“…Sounds like she was lucky you were there,” he said, voice softer than before. He wasn’t good at pep talks, but he’d try anyway. “Whatever she went through in the past… can stay there. She’s with you now, and you two get to decide the rest.”

Absol’s shyness make sense, but despite that it made a —

expression softened more.

“Yeah. She’s been with me since I was a kid. I tend to rotate my team based on whatever expedition or research I’m working on, but Umbreon’s the constant.”

He’d pause for a moment before turning to face Infini. “What about you?” How’d you meet Amaranth?”

meet you, and thank you for the warning. I’ve heard a little about Lumiose’s surprise areas, and admittedly I think that’s one of the reasons Umbreon was interested in coming here.”

A small smile crept on his face as he spoke of his Pokemon and when asked about it being his partner Kael’s —

Kael rested his hands loosely in his pockets, showing that perhaps the dark types weren’t the only thing the trainers had in common. He generally wasn’t the most talkative type, but watching the pokemon becoming increasingly comfortable around each other seemed to put him at ease too.

“Nice to —

said softly.

Hearing the trainer behind Absol, Kael let out a quiet sigh.

“If only, right…” he murmured, his tone making it clear Umbreon had a long history of wandering up to strangers and decided they were her new best friend.

“She’s just overly friendly, I hope it isn’t a bother,” he said as —

Trailer behind, Kael slowed down when he heard Umbreon make an excited chuff. Before he caught up, Umbreon fully closed the distance, walking right up to Absol already leaning down to greet her, its tail wagging joyously.

“Well, that explains why she hurried… she’s got a soft spot for Absols,” he —

Kael narrowed his eyes at Sushi as it chose to block the attack instead of moving out of the way. As it counter attacked with Hydro Pump, Umbreon chuffed, planting its feet as it landed and released a barrier to block the attack, using Protect.

As the barrier faded, Umbreon went back on the —

Moving in close for its own attack, Bisharp wouldn’t have an opportunity to dodge, taking the Mud Slap directly. Also to Nemona’s benefit at this close distance, the attack managed to splatter on the dark Pokemon’s face, slightly hampering its vision and thus its accuracy.

Bisharp shook its head, —

She wanted to see it all, but knowing how her trainer was in crowds, turned back and brushed up against his leg.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine,” he said softly, bending to rub her head before nodding toward the street. “Lead the way. I’m right behind you.”

eyes wide.

He couldn’t help but chuckle, reading the look on his partner’s face. “If we manage a breakthrough that makes this trip worth it, I’ll take you there myself.”

Now…his promise kept.

Kael stood at the fountain’s edge, watching her circle the plaza like a child lost in a candy store. —
