WOODBINE RACETRACK - TORONTO - DAY Under an unusually hot May sun, trainers work out horses on a heavy track. SPECTATORS mill about on the grounds and in the grandstand. Two young men amble along the racetrack concourse. JACK GILMOUR (mid-20s, tall), in a light, cotton jacket and his brother RUSS (early 20s, rugged), in a cap, casual shirt and suspenders, wend their way through the crowd. RUSS (V.O.) Horse racing is the only sport where the participants don't have a mind of their own. Russ and Jack separate. Jack queues up at the ticket window, deftly rolling a silver dollar across his knuckles. Russ buys an ice cream and heads over to the fence to watch the horses warm up. RUSS (V.O.) It means that the horse is the one that's really in charge. Jack takes the ticket and winks at the seller. RUSS (V.O.) I've seen enough races to believe it. A second-rate rider on a great horse will almost always beat a better rider on a lousy horse. Russ watches a jockey comically trying to mount a horse but the horse keeps turning and won't let him. Jack goes over to Russ and hands him the ticket. JACK Sixty to one. Long shot. Russ looks at the ticket and nods. EUGENE MARTINI (40s, chubby) waddles over. Eugene breathes heavily and fans himself with his racing form. JACK Eugene. RUSS Eug. EUGENE Fellas. Geez, my nuts are meltin' into my Oxfords.
