the black and white thinking here reminded me of amane. the way they both had their own virtues that they lived by and how differently they broke them: one through helping a patient and one through killing one... its crazy how being a doctor or "playing god" ended up biting them in the ass like. MAN

WAIT. shidou in an interrogation does admit that he "has killed for selfish reasons before" and i believe he's talking about the truck driver then! but its still like... a footnote compared to everything else so yeah. shidou just doesnt gaf or stopping giving a fuck after his family was on the line

hes always been a guy who looked at the big picture (ex: prioritizing future patients in need of organs instead of the families left behind) so i can see him registering the truck driver's death as a single drop in the bucket of murders he has hypocritically committed

the only instance addressing the driver is in his character trailer: "you're in my way, hurry up and die!" but thats literally it 😭 i think the idea of him obfuscating the actual murder is interesting, but i personally think shidou genuinely doesnt care about it or the truck driver at all LOL

nodding sagely... i agree! the more i think about it the more i appreciate this detail bc like you said he would be pretty cut and dry (like yuno's case) if he was simply saving lives in a somewhat dubiously ethical career as a transplant doctor (which is very controversial in jpn apparently!)

OK ONE MORE THING. do you think the addition of shidou killing the truck driver was a good or bad thing? do you think it kinda muddles the point of his story by straightup making him a murderer (as opposed to the dubious nature of his job) or do you think it adds more by showcasing his selfishness?

i wonder if she's ever received such unconditional affection from an adult before. every gesture of kindness from shidou was so foreign that she regarded them with contempt, but these headpats and kind words... i think they reached her, whether she likes it or not
