Some sites block requests from w3.org validators, not specifically but likely in their attempt to block unwelcome bots.

Do you have suggestions for how they can write web application firewall (WAF) rules to allow the validators?

Using Figma Desktop on a train with a spotty connection is infuriating. Of all the apps that should be offline first, Figma is high up, surely (yes I know it’s a wrapped website).

How this software became the industry “default” will forever baffle me.

I’m trying to figure out what works better for alt text accessibility in practice — please reply ONLY if you ever actually use text-to-speech, braille interfaces, or anything similar for accessing the alt text of images. (Boosts welcome.)

After reading this, I went through my blog and managed to remove a few *hundred* useless `class` attributes.

I also got rid of several redundant `id` attributes as well.

The majority of my CSS now uses semantic targetting rather than scattershot #id and .class

Is that *sensible*? Well that's […]

The vast majority of your users are not, in fact, using the latest and greatest iPhone. Lower-end Android devices far outweigh them, so it’s imperative to test on them and make them a part of your development workflow — especially if you use a JavaScript framework […]

The interpolate-size property is a great example of progressive enhancement

When it comes to new CSS capabilities you don't have to avoid using them because there's not much browser support. Lean into progressive enhancement instead. It'll cover a lot of cases for you […]

Do want: Web Preferences API, AND browsers with it telling me if some page is using any of the corresponding media queries.

Like, if I choose to prefer reduced motion, then I want to know that page contained some motion that I'd want to re-enable to opt-in. Same with reduced transparency […]

Love to see and hear RSS stuff. Get really into what works for you and it’s the best way to keep up.

Tools like feedbin.com and sill.social keep me up to date way more than this place.

Profiles on here have RSS too, which I like to use. Just stick /rss at the end

"World Wid Web of Whatever"

I wanted to set a timer, so I asked Siri,
She was, like, all "ehhhh"
And I was, like, "whatever!"

Then Copilot comes up to me and it's all, like,
"Hey, do you want to write a letter?"
And I'm, like, "yeah, whatever!"

So later I'm using a search engine
And this […]

My periodic rave at how much I love #rss (I am tying together lots of data for my work) and how it is truly the glue that holds together much of the open web. We are so lucky it gained critical mass before the worst of Web 2.0 took over and that it has lasted. We need to keep it alive at all costs.
