Magic and Tech immediately makes my brain go to sword & laser - GURPS maybe?, the most variable crunch game of all time. Plus all those well researched and great setting books to mix and match. Gamma World? Mutant Crawl Classics? Bent towards He-Man/Thundarr the Barbarian/Blackstar style adventure?

Fear of being eaten or accidentally maimed aren't even on my list for why I don't think you should own big cat. All the reasons NOT to do it are about the health/quality of life for the animal, not me. Being accidentally killed by your pet lion because it got the zoomies is a pretty rad way to go.

build a community garden, help prisoners adjust to freedom or get education while incarcerated, teach children, pick a local cause that will do real good for real people and put your talents towards that. This shit is ONLY healthy as a whimsical hobby and diversion. Sincerely, An Old Guy.

Klaus bro, this shit is toxic for you, walk away, go study ornithology or archaeology or world music or volunteer at an organization that helps people in need or pain. Your clear desire to explore truth and reveal a better world aren't to be found on this path. Go help people in need,volunteer,(1/2)

So us old heads had all those games you mentioned, but d20 hit like a tidal wave, and a lot of the companies put out d20 corebooks of their own games as a form of marketing. No one really understood the OGL and the first couple of years where the wild west, so companies did whatever they wanted.

It was more of a way for publishers to introduce people locked into the D20/DnD mindset to other settings.
I found a lot of players became curious about other systems because of first hearing about a D20 version, then getting exposure to the setting and then getting into the actual systems.

Hey Cthulhu D20 was not a terrible book. It was actually quite good and had some excellent rules for Sanity/etc ported over to D20. It was a bad fit for the modern setting in the same way that d20 modern was, but it was great as a sourcebook for running a darker, mythos-tainted fantasy campaign.

Yeah a lot of people don't realize that Star Trek's convictions about peace and diplomacy come from men that had been shot at and watched their friends die in war.
Even FreeLoveCrystalWavingHollywoodProducerStereotype Gene had been shot down twice.

I have a special love in my heart for Commodore Decker, I rewatched that episode recently and that actor's performance is heartbreaking, he really elevated that part to another level. And there weren't a lot of shows that explored that side of war outside of Combat! and Twilight Zone in that era.

The level of theater talent that showed up for relatively minor roles in DS9 is kind of crazy. A lot of people don't realize that Avery, Rene, Armin, Andy Robinson, Brock Peters and others had immense respect as teachers, directors and actors in the theater world and could pull incredible guests.

Wil Decker was an exemplary leader, he just cracked because he did the 'right thing' and instead wound up listening to his crew die horribly. In the episode he sucks, but it's a portrayal of a broken man desperate to atone for his failure - not the shitty leadership of a corrupt TNG admiral.

The MOTU Encyclopedia is like an unofficial sourcebook for MCC. It's so weird and good.

My wife would adore them.

A pox on you and your house for 10 generations for putting this abomination in my mind...

My favorite is when you love a movie/show and another person loves it but then they wind up arguing with you because you don't love it for the 'right' (same) reasons that they do and aren't a 'real' fan. Youthful geekism when your identity and your ego aren't quite formed and attach to everything.

Issue by issue politics that concentrate on material changes for peoples lives for the better is how it's supposed to work. In many ways a Parliamentary system is a more robust way to reinforce this basic truth than our weirdo 'winner take all' adversarial 2 party system of 'rich guys vs everyone.'
November 26, 2025 at 5:51 PM
To be clear, I'm in the 'DemSoc for now, Luxury Space Communism later' category of political beliefs, and it still took me until my 30's to realize that not everyone wants to be a humanist hippie in their hearts if they just got enough education and support - certainly not even in my own country.

Yeap. Americans in general seem to have a real problem with wanting other countries to be Democratic and then throwing a huge hissy fit when a party that doesn't support American interests gets Democratically elected. USA Liberals are as guilty of colonial/imperialist assumptions as Conservatives.

The Muslim Brotherhood is also a very different political organization, nation to nation, chapter to chapter. They are not unified across nations and have a variety of beliefs and objectives often opposed to each other.
