Such a stunning bird with a buff / grey chest and belly, slightly darker back, black chin with dark orange either side and orange forehead leading to a fading buff brown bushy crest. A black line above it's beak stretches into a black eye stripe giving the bird a rather intense and almost malevolent look. the wing markings are more defined than its body with black and white stripes with a tiny detail of red tips to its secondaries. the black tail has a yellow tip and the whole look is finished off with an orange vent. This bird has just tossed a hawthorn berry to get its position right for swallowing Close up of the same bird as the previous photo. It has just caught the berry in its open beak and its tongue which expands into a flat plate at its tip, is also touching the berry to manoeuvre it.

Photo taken on Cefin Sidan Beach South Wales. In the foreground is the skull of a Fin whale stranded earlier this year. It is already nearly stripped of flesh and lies slightly buried in the sand. The beach stretches behind it and in the background the hills of Worms Head Peninsula can be seen across the bay. The birds are touching beaks - they do this repeatedly every time they meet as a way of strengthening their life time bond.

We waited shivering in temperatures of 1 degrees and finally, as the sun went down, the starlings came streaming in like a black river in the sky. Definitely enough birds for #FlyDay and I think this must count as a #BirdScape as well

Sky and Moors above Sheffield UK. In the foreground the path leading to the top of Stanage edge and the moor and fields to the sides of it. The grass and bracken have turned gold and bronze as winter approaches, bright in the sunshine with the colour enhanced by the earlier rain. In the distance the hills of the peak district. The sun is shining and the sky blue, but dominated by large white clouds, edged grey at the bottom where they are heavy with rain. And boy did it rain, the net few days saw flooding over lots of the country as Storm Claudia swept in.

View across the valley from Stanage Edge towards Bamford. The day, which had started out in bright sunshine, had become cloudy with bits of blue sky allowing the sun to filter through, lighting up areas of Larch forest to an almost luminous gold. In the foreground dry stone walls divide a field from the dark bronze dead bracken while further back more fields create patches of green vibrant with damp grass from the plentiful rain thats been falling for the last week. In the background the hills are dark in shadow, blurred by the haze. The sky is pale with scattered fluffy cumulus some with and ominous dark feel ready to drop more water (which it did!)

The wings have a coloured stripe on them which is often hidden when the bird is sitting, unless, as in this case, the wings are partially lifted showing off the beautiful, broad dark blue bordered by a thin edge of white.

Apart from the very end the only branches remaining are pointing down into the water like the legs of a giant stick insect, the branches on the top side presumably having broken off over time. behind the dead branch are the other trees lining the bank. The water is completely still allowing a near perfect reflection of both fallen and living trees. There are 2 ducks - a male and female mallard sitting on the end of the trunk near to the bank, the male has his beak tucked under his wing.

Sub adult gull photographed straight on. it is walking in the waves on the beach at the edge of the sea one foot just raised out of the water as it steps. With anthropomorphic interpretation it could be said to look imperious and unimpressed
