How we made global routing faster with Bloom filters - Vercel
We replaced slow JSON path lookups with Bloom filters in our global routing service, cutting memory usage by 15% and reducing 99th percentile lookup times from hundreds of milliseconds to under 1 ms. Here’s how we did it.

I see people get mad at genAI for the power it uses comparing it to bitcoin.
It does use a significant amount of electricity, but let's compare:
- driving to the library in my economy EV (1 kwh)
- a single bitcoin transaction (1500 kwh)
- generating a single image with stable diffusion (0.01 kwh)

I'm back on paternity leave for 5 more weeks. I took the first 6 weeks when she was newborn, now she's a cute 3-month old.
My wife just started nursing school a week ago and so I've had all 8 kids to myself all day. So much fun and adventure!
And I thought my day job was challenging.

This one is still bugging me, it won't go away. But I'm constantly stuck on finding a good problem I can solve well. Market research is so hard, especially when people you're don't know what they need/want because they can't imagine it existing.

I keep getting this feeling like there is something I need to build and put out in the world (business or service or product) related to my various system designs, (rando, caify, nibs, encantis, etc...) but I can't, for the life of me, figure out what would actually be useful to most people.

I don't know why, but this function implementation really makes me happy.
It took me way too long to get it right, but it's just perfect now :D

I'm very proud these folks are succeeding to make decentralized open source social nets mainstream. I tried with Manyverse and failed, but I realize that all the bold advocacy and predictions I did for decentralized open protocols was... after all correct.
Bluesky is a PBC (public benefit corporation) with the mission “to develop and drive large-scale adoption of technologies for open and decentralized public conversation.”
From the start, our goal has been to build a decentralized social network that is usable by the mainstream.

I'm finally reading up on AT protocol and realizing my short time working on IPLD and CAR with @why.bsky.team was very helpful in understanding it all.
It's a great generic system, but I still wonder if it's efficient enough for my needs or if I should mix in some of my more optimized designs.

@pfrazee.com I was thinking about Beaker and wondering how much of that experience I can bring back.
I don't want to maintain an electron app or fork chromium, but I am wondering if I can at least make sharable hyperdrives using a collection of AT Protocol records in place of hypercore?

After a month without a drop of rain (My yard became a dust bowl since we don't have grass yet), it's now been raining non-stop for a few days and I live in a mud pit!

I'm allergic to cats, and yet we rescued this stray a while ago.
He is the most snuggly and grateful kitty I've ever seen.
I was working outside building a shed, and he walked up to me asking for snuggles.
You can hear the purring across the room when I hold him like this.
