CRASH - Coalition to Reduce Auto Size Hazards
@crashcoalition.bsky.social
Our Canada-wide coalition is pushing govts to stop the proliferation of dangerous pickups & large SUVs. See our Apr 2024 report & recommendations: https://windsorlawcities.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Oversized-Report.pdf
Safest place for a pickup...is in a cargobike. At EcoFair we asked people to write to new Transport Minister @stevenmackinnon.bsky.social to require safety warnings on pickup ads + for auto-makers to re-design deadly vehicle front-ends. Seven x more likely to kill a child in crash. #oversizeddanger

Does a pickup's high front-end compensate for the driver's wee little cargo space? We don't think so. Every 10cm increase in front-end height = 22% increase in death risk to pedestrian in crash. Meanwhile, cargo space has remained largely the same. #onpoli www.walktoronto.ca/wp-content/u...

Why are cities like TO using so many big pickups for small tasks? In assessment by @graphicmatt.com 77% of heavy duty trucks doing light duty. Here's one of them ... Our report recommends a procurement policy review. toronto.cityhallwatcher.com/p/chw277 #onpoli

Oversized pickups aren't built for cities; they're built for some people's egos. Read our recommendations here ... windsorlawcities.ca/wp-content/u...

Sad that we sacrifice the safety of our children+others on foot for so little gain:

"there’s a very good argument that tony trims of the modern pickups are de facto replacements for vehicles like the Town Car — acres of interior space, ample power + road presence galore"

Pickup trucks -- which are getting bigger, taller, and more dangerous -- are marketed for their cargo capacity, even though it's actually getting smaller. The rest of us, especially pedestrians + cyclists, pay the price with greater risks to our safety. www.drivingline.com/articles/why....

See our recommendations to address the lethal danger of pickups and large SUVs -- vehicles that are more deadly than cars in crashes with pedestrians & cyclists. windsorlawcities.ca/wp-content/u...

Every level of govt has authority to rein in lethal pickups. No level of govt has yet to take the lead, while pickups proliferate. We're working on changing that! Join us in this fight for safer roads.
