Large corporate ownership and exclusivity and a market of extraction in which creative works have to swim leads to piracy. Robust social and cultural institutions of knowledge distribution, economic security, etc reduce piracy. The individual level doesn't matter, the institutional level does.

I'm reminded of Graeber talking about the conversion of Universities into banks as debt became increasingly fundamental to higher ed. I think he was spot on, these universities are acting like market agents rather than principled institutions. You can expect no better from Harvard than Wal Mart.

It's not that building more housing isn't certainly part of the solution to the housing crisis. Deregulation and an increase in housing stock may help middle income earners. But without housing as a mandated human right the most vulnerable among us will remain unhoused.
