Ah boo. Jack Vettriano has died. Loved his work - and his general disdain for artworld snobbery. This, from 2014, was my riff on one of his more famous paintings.

Also struck by the thought that he and both editors of this comic are now gone… Bah…
Two ladies enjoying the beach while a butler offers shade. Based on a painting by Jack Vettriano, except the butler here is an alien lizard figure, while three planets orbit close by. Because that’s how science works.

Settlers on Mars, communicating with Houston control, finding reasons to stay in their base and not go outside. But who is doing the communicating? I was working six days a week on a ridiculously stressful project at this point. Couldn’t sleep. My day off was spent playing a ridiculously stressful TTRPG, online with friends. There was no visible end point in either. Then there was the whole ‘world falling to bits’ outside. I just had this one-pager for …relaxing? Which is maybe why it’s so detailed?? 😀

Some concept bits and pieces
Angel. Winged skeleton with a crown of thorns and a tether. Was making this all up as I went along. Acrylic over digital, then re-photographed with digital finishes Head of Medusa concept. Added googly eyes to one snake in her hair and now I can’t take it seriously. Points if you can guess which one though. Bass playing zombie robot girl. Concept from being in a comics-based band at the time and a grimy bar in South London that had similar style art all over the walls Big versus little. A theme that has run round my head in some form or another since I was a kid. Big ugly monster versus a tiny flying fairy type, in this case.

Hello. Here’s a throwaway comic I did as a result of watching a lot of (too many) spring break/creepy house-based horror movies (4 pages)
Setup page, four college kids in a camper van. An old house is the destination A million movies begin here. They arrive at the house. It’s creepier than advertised. Any normal person would ‘nope’ out at this stage but movies require complete lapses in common sense, don’t they? An alternative (inviting, amazing) suggestion for spring break is mentioned - and agreed upon. Our otherwise-idiot heroes turn around and depart for fun times and cocktails. Plot twist, see?! Two murderers inside can’t understand why no one walks blindly into the creepy old house any more. But hey, at least that’s not how horror movies work! Bring nonsensical plots and characters bereft of brains! At least one of them will fall over at some stage, for no discernible reason, whilst trying to escape! Yay! I think I was in a grump about something when I originally made this…

A delivery driver shares a cigarette with a millionaire’s butler. As they deliberate their dilemma, halos and wings appear. Over the Hollywood sign, crows take off to find more carrion. Judge Anderson, Mega City One Psi-Judge. A girl stumbles out of a nightclub, followed by an older man. Two nearby night owls flick a cigarette away in disgust as she is ill. Flares and the lights of police cars mark out a crashed truck on a night time forest road. In the distance an ambulance crew deal with the driver of an overturned SUV. The local sheriff turns to reluctantly acknowledge an elderly man who has arrived on pushbike.
