Academia is all over this. It’s an ugly irony that nobody values tertiary education less than a professor seeking a field assistant with a biology degree to work unsalaried and covering their own travel costs.
this "passion tax" appears all over the place & should be talked about more. you see it in book stores and game stores all the time

excitement for particular work is constantly weaponized to depress wages & pit workers against each other

Excited to share our new paper on genetic rescue in the Pacific pocket mouse! To conserve this endangered species, we sought to understand whether small populations at risk of outbreeding depression are better managed in isolation or with gene flow. @science.org

Fitness benefits of genetic rescue despite chromosomal differences in an endangered pocket mouse
Two-thirds of Earth’s species have undergone population declines, leaving many vulnerable to genomic erosion and inbreeding depression. Genetic rescue can boost the fitness of small populations, but p...

If you are at #ESEB2025 and you are interested in predicting evolution 🧬📈 - retrospectively and into to the future - then you are in luck! Symposium 42 organised by @joelpick.bsky.social and Lizy Mittell is on today, and S24 by myself and @sevans.bsky.social tomorrow!
What do you think, can we forecast evolution❓

@sevans.bsky.social and I would love to hear your thoughts, so if you are going to #ESEB2025, submit a talk to our symposium (S24: Forecasting evolution in natural populations) and join @colingarroway.bsky.social and Patrik Nosil!

Deadline April 25.
