Drinking beer, riding bikes and fixing stuff.

Post about active travel, music and a bit of tech and politics. And riding bikes. And drinking beer.
The original patent says that's wrong -

And this couple who downsized to a home worth over £2m. And who is presumably going to inherit a large chunk of her mother’s £2m+ home as well.

On the breadline basically. Can’t afford to contribute a penny more to society.

My flat has dropped in value by 17% since Labour came in.

Has he murdered someone in it? None of the statistics suggest prices have fallen at all. Even the one and the same Telegraph piece.

Interesting that these delivery robots are being used on the pavement. I can't find any type approval or permissions.

I did find a 2022 Cambridge Council doc that says the DfT advised as yet no legal definition but they were likely motor vehicles and not permitted on pavement.
November 28, 2025 at 3:47 PM
Looking further here's some stuff from a trial in Cambridge.

By my reading the DfT have said theres no legal basis for these to be on the pavement but the council went ahead anyway.

Can you point out the relevant sections? because what you've linked to appears to be all about "on road" trials. Whereas these are being used on the pavement.

I'm assuming you did actually read the thing you've linked to and didn't just posted the first link that appeared in google?

It’s a vehicle with a motor.

Mobility scooters have an approval type and a specific exemption that permits their use in the pavement.

What rules allow these robot motor vehicles?

That's well over twice the annual UK mileage (unless you'r assuming every household has two cars) but that doesn't alter EV being significantly cheaper.

Mountain biking is a great way to meet people. The last few weeks I've met 2 paramedics, lots of nurses, maxillofacial specialists and an orthopaedic surgeon. I thought I met Jesus at one point but on reflection it was probably just the morphine.

Just another bit of stupid complexity in the tax system which really should be driven by ridiculous politically driven bungs like this.

A question you ignored - given you agree with IHT and that 'dynastic wealth is bad', would you set the IHT exemption lower or higher than it is now? Income/Wealth inequality has increased in the UK in recent decades - it seems the current IHT is going to perpetuate that

ifs.org.uk/articles/inc...
November 25, 2025 at 1:30 PM
We do have elements of that already.
November 25, 2025 at 12:52 PM
Only 4% of estates pay IHT - it's not as if we have a lovely equal society where everyone shares the wealth now.

It feels like something other than relying on inherited wealth might enable more of the population to start families, own property and live out of poverty.

and it seems if you don't have the free cash to pay tax due you can just apply to the HMRC to postpone it until after probate is granted. (or get loans for the purpose, but now sure why you'd need to if HMRC will defer)
November 24, 2025 at 12:40 PM
I think theres a case for telling people who are about to receive a significant windfall (estates in excess of £1m) that they can afford to employ a solicitor to do the administration work and manage the process if they find it too stressful.

But this does seem to render the point moot anyway
November 24, 2025 at 12:35 PM
It’s pretty edge case. And it looks like the executor can borrow (against the value of the estate) if they need to.

You’ve got a 1.2m house to secure the loan against - hardly high risk, so rates aren’t going to be stupid.
November 24, 2025 at 9:04 AM
And loans are available. There’s no reason they should be interest free - you’re still earning interest/value on the stuff inherited before probate.
November 24, 2025 at 9:01 AM
Not really. They had nearly 100k just in an ISA they inherited. Situation where inheritance is far enough over £1m for tax to be significant and there are no liquid assets seems pretty edge case.

And you can borrow, or delay and pay interest.
November 24, 2025 at 8:58 AM
It amazes me that people will publish their idiocy like this as well: 800k of the increase in value of the house was NOT “money they’d worked hard for” at all - it was unearned, untaxed, gain (and that’s accounting for inflation)

And they had nearly 100k in cash handy to pay the up front tax
November 24, 2025 at 8:55 AM
(There’s a lot more but that’s the most pertinent stuff).

Putney Bridge issues seem unrelated - initially improved and only more recently did traffic/congestion increase.

New report commissioned by London Councils finds controlled parking zones, reallocation of parking spaces and increases to cost of parking all reduce motor vehicle use.

so much madness.

I never managed to work out their issue with Carrie Johnson - an arrow that points at "Leeds"?
