The AMA doesn’t actually license doctors but they have endless influence over their state chapters which, in turn, recommend medical board members to Governors who appoint them. He’s faced no consequences, only promotion.
Both Medicaid and Obamacare are managed by Oz's agency and President Donald Trump this year has deployed Oz, a former TV personality, to defend administration policy. The AMA has celebrated a handful of more narrow changes to telehealth rules and electronic prescribing that Oz oversaw. The AMA CEO, John Whyte, has in the past described Oz as a personal friend. Both Oz and AMA physicians hope to rein in insurers' practice of requiring doctors to receive their prior authorization before providing certain services to patients. In June, Oz said he had secured insurers' promise to limit the practice, but later in the summer CMS launched a controversial pilot project to test prior authorization within Medicare.

U.S. medicine is not run by doctors.
Not anymore. 78% of doctors now work for a hospital, corporation, or private equity firm as compared to ~15% in 1980.

ABSTRACT This study examines a critical juncture in the development of health insurance in the United States. We examine how the American Medical Association (AMA) reduced support for National Health Insurance (NHI) in the immediate post-World War Il period and contributed to the entrenchment of private insurance coverage. The AMA's national campaign against NHI directed by the country's first political public relations firm, Whitaker & Baxter's Campaigns, Inc-implemented a two-pronged strategy: (1) persuade the American voter that supporting NHI was equivalent to supporting socialism; and, (2) enroll working-age adults (and eventually their dependents) in private health insurance plans to reduce demand for a public scheme. We bring together archival data from several novel sources documenting Campaign operations, which involved leveraging mass communications and the professional network of physicians. We find a one standard deviation increase in Campaign exposure explains approximately 20% of the increase in private medical insurance enrollment and a similar decline in public opinion support for legislation enacting NHI. We further show that Republican legislators from jurisdictions with greater Campaign exposure were more likely to oppose the Truman plan, and adopted rhetoric closely aligned with the Campaign's messaging.

REPORT OF THE AD HOC WORKING GROUP ON PHYSICIAN WORKFORCE CONDITIONS, SCIENTIFIC INTEGRITY, AND RESIDENT ORGANIZING IN THE POST-2020 POLICY ENVIRONMENT Position Statement on the Dr. Mehmet Oz Event: Threats to Scientific Integrity and the Coercion of Resident Physicians Executive Summary The American medical profession is undergoing a structural realignment driven by three converging forces: the accelerating unionization of resident physicians (1]; the collapse of scientific and public-health norms in the United States due to the political capture of federal agencies (2); and a widening gap between the priorities of organized medicine's legacy institutions and the lived reality of trainees. Medical students and residents now occupy the most precarious position in the physician workforce while simultaneously holding the greatest leverage to redirect the profession's trajectory. The present moment is shaped by the consolidation of political power by the current Republican administration and the placement of high-profile COVID-19 contrarians-individuals whose pandemic-era claims were repeatedly discredited- into leadership roles within federal science and health agencies [3]. This shift has destabilized traditional assumptions about evidence-based governance, regulatory oversight, and the civic role of physicians. Meanwhile, the resident workforce-the backbone of the U.S. hospital system -faces unprecedented strain: declining inflation-adjusted wages, chronic understaffing, escalating retaliation risks, and high levels of burnout. Residents organizing through CIR/SEIU have secured major gains across the country [4], while the AMA has only recently adopted policies supportive of collective bargaining for residents. The medical profession has clearly written out standards, in the form of actual State legislation called the “Medical Practice Act.”

They have simply chosen themselves over the rest of us.

Here’s the first statute in the California MPA. This is an outright lie.
2001.1. Protection of the public shall be the highest priority for the Medical Board of California in exercising its licensing, regulatory, and disciplinary functions. Whenever the protection of the public is inconsistent with other interests sought to be promoted, the protection of the public shall be paramount. (Added by Stats. 2002, Ch. 107, Sec. 4.
