This. All of this. It’s not just the individual incidents. It’s the weight of all of it. Chicago is being intentionally traumatized. Repeatedly. It’s hard to describe. Kyle did it.

In last 2 months, trying to count how many days I *didn’t* hear helicopters overhead & I’m coming up w single digits.

Endorse. Also, make sure you go to a R1 or private for undergrad. 🥴 It helps to be born to rich parents. 😂

Only 9% of R1 faculty went to 4 year publics if I’m reading this right. I did undergrad at SUNY Plattsburgh (and got a great education) but I did go to UNC for my PhD.
I don't think anyone should enter into a PhD program (unless you're trying to scam a free MA) given the dismal state of academia. But if you do, absolutely do not apply to any program that does not prominently display its placement record. Those places are a waste of your time.
Important—and sobering—findings about the state of the discipline and the academy.

Happy Veterans Day.

One-fourth of federal workers are veterans.

Trump has literally decimated the federal workforce over the last nine months. www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-...
Trump Has Forced Out An Alarming Number Of Federal Workers — And Now We Have An Exact Number
“The performance of our government across the board is being diminished,” warned Max Stier, CEO of Partnership for Public Service.

University of California President James B. Milliken writes about how science funding and immigration fuel America’s innovation - and how they’re now at risk. Read the op-ed. ⤵️
Contributor: Science funding and immigration fuel America's innovation. They're at risk
The symbiotic relationship between the federal government and our universities — one that has delivered so much for America, its people and its economy — is now at risk.

Good points
Some thoughts on the CR/minibus.

1 The Dems negotiating with Rs were not freelancing. They coordinated with Sen Schumer. A few were ready to give in on day one, others worked to maximize appropriations wins.

Those voting for the 'deal' are the ones furthest away from electoral consequences.

The fundamental issue is that Democrats wants government programs to exist and work, and Republicans don’t. So, they are just not playing on a level field with the shut downs. They have very asymmetric preferences. Yes Schumer is weak but that is almost irrelevant.

Working the refs works. Just ask coach K or Donald Trump, who has worked the media so hard they simply can’t cover politics at all objectively. The government is fighting tooth and nail to deprive people of food. This is some dark, sick stuff.

Using hunger as a weapon against your own people/tactic of political negotiation is evil. Full stop. Stalin and others have done the same. Let’s not let this be normalized.

We're closing on two months of one person single-handedly shuttering Congress. This is beyond absurd. No one should be able to do this.
Speaker Johnson is officially keeping the House in recess again next week. This will be the eighth consecutive week the House has been out of session. The chamber hasn't met since Sept. 19. Adelita Grijalva, who was elected on Sept. 23, has not been sworn in.

One time. The GOP has won more than 50% of the popular vote <one time> since 1992. And yet, every day, you are bombarded with Takes™️ from Ezra Douthglesias about how deeply unpopular The Democrats and their policy platform are, without any reflection on how the same standard applies to the GOP.
The Dems have won the popular vote in presidential elections six times since 1992 by roughly 5.5%(1992), 8.5%,(1996) .5%(2000), 7.3%(2008), 4%(2012), 2%(2016),and 4.5%(2020).
In that period the GOP presidential candidate has won the popular vote twice: 2.5%(2004) and 1.5%(2024).
Douthat writes that 2024, when Harris lost by 1.5% of the popular vote, was "an ideological referendum and progressivism lost." I wonder why he didn't view the 2020 election, when Trump lost by 4.5% of the popular vote, as a far more significant loss for conservatism.

"Economic populism" has become completely divorced from policy. Vance cheered on and supported Trump's "big, beautiful bill," perhaps the most regressive piece of domestic legislation in recent history, featuring tax cuts for the rich and benefit cuts for the poor. He does say "elites" a lot tho.

Anonymous billionaires funding the army and the police should be a leading story in the US. It seems less than alarmist to say these are signs of oligarchy.
The nation’s largest police fleet of Tesla Cybertrucks is set to begin patrolling the streets of Las Vegas in November thanks to a donation from a U.S. tech billionaire, raising concerns about the blurring of lines between public and private interests.
