There are a few ways to start a painting. You can start with a drawing directly on canvas. Some will project a photo to the canvas. Or you can go through all the stages of ugliness blocking in shapes and building volume and colour. I just used what paint I had on my palette from previous painting.

I met Nora at Sephora, and as it turned out she had a twin sister, Laura. True story.

As I was painting I kept noticing that the planes of their faces were so identical that so were the highlights and shadows.
