Anna Seghers' Transit is a classic novel about the foggy, unreal in-between of displacement - and I might be one of the few readers who would have preferred even less plot…
Waiting in Flux: On Bureaucracy, Escape, and Identity in Transit
In Anna Seghers' Transit, a narrator escapes a German camp, drifts through occupied France, and ends up in Marseille - taking on the identity of a writer who killed himself before the narrator could deliver a message to him. What stayed with me is the sense of an existential holding pattern: refugees suspended in time, nothing happening and yet everything in flux.

Paul Lynch’s Prophet Song is a breathless novel that's perhaps now even more chilling to read than in the fall of 2023, when I visited Dublin and picked up this copy. Everyday feels like one of our Western democracies is inching closer to closer to the Prophet Song's reality. #booksky
Prophet Song and our Democracies’ Event Horizon
Paul Lynch’s Prophet Song is not just a dystopian novel – it’s a mirror held up to the fragility of Western democracies.

the basic problem facing american democracy is that one party has decided it wants a king and will hand over as much authority as is necessary to make that happen
All but three House Republicans just voted for Trump's tariffs. The procedural measure, which preemptively surrenders congressional power to stop Trump's tariffs, passed with all Democrats voting no. This was the vote count:
