Ayyub reports receiving violent threats and images referencing the assassination of Indira Gandhi, along with messages mentioning her family’s location. Despite alerting police, authorities have yet to register an FIR (First Information Report) or open a formal investigation.

Foreign journalists are still banned from entering the territory, leaving local reporters, many of whom have worked under unimaginable pressure for years, as the world’s only witnesses to the conflict.

Across the country, news deserts are expanding and trust in media is declining. Still, journalists are on the ground when news happens, talking to sources, verifying facts, and correcting the record when necessary.

CJFE stands with them. We oppose all attempts to restrict press freedom and block entry to journalists during conflicts. We call for accountability, protection of journalists under international law, and immediate, independent access to Gaza.

Since October 2023, at least 192 journalists & media workers have been killed in Gaza, making this the deadliest period on record for the press, according to CJP figures. Many more face detention, injury, or starvation. Blocking access & targeting media workers undermines the world’s right to know.

When Meta blocked Canadian news content in response to Bill C-18, it didn’t just impact major publishers. It severed a vital link for people across the country who rely on social media to stay informed, as well as younger people who prefer social media over traditional outlets.
