It was he who plundered Niall, the son of Hugh O'Higgin, at Visneach', in Meath. Henry Dalton, however, plundered James Tuite and the King's people, and gave the O'Higgins out of the preys" [then acquired] a cow for each and every cow taken from them, and afterwards escorted them to Connaught. The O'Higgins, with Niall, then satirized John Stanley, who lived after this satire but five weeks, for he died of the virulence of the lampoons.

when I was born, my father suggested I be named John but my mother disagreed, as there were already enough John Mc Mahons, she said. So you can imagine how I felt, many decades later, when doing geneaological research, when I found another John Mc Mahon, who died in France in 1916

In my first year of college in UCD, I learned to specifically tune up my 'regional accent' any time I met someone I felt suspicious of. I felt their reaction was a good judge of character. Bleedin mad yoke Dubs tended to pass the test. Caught out a few D4 goys, though not as many as I had assumed

Haven't read Mantel before but I already know I'm in the hands of a master. Really gives lie to the whole 'no spoilers' aggro - she has told me a good chunk of the story before I've even read the first line. She is confident that these details will not detract from my enjoyment of the tale to follow

The Hawaiians got Chief of War which is incredible, Jason Momoa doing his usual tough guy stuff plus a lot more range, in the most stunning settings and, as far as I can tell a really sensitive treatment of pre-contact Polynesian culture.
