The authors remark that prolonged treatment with DCA may cause mild peripheral neuropathy, which resolves once the medication is discontinued. However, since the treatment of viral infections typically involves only a few days of administration, such neurological effects would be unlikely.

DCA has been used in the compassionate treatment of congenital lactic acidosis in children and is currently under study for the treatment of other conditions, such as cancer (preferably used in combination therapy), endometriosis, and pulmonary hypertension.

DCA prevents viruses from hijacking the metabolism of the infected cells to generate new viral particles, and it has shown effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2, the common cold virus, and the respiratory syncytial virus.
