If your friend cries, don’t try and stop them, or feel that you have to try to ‘cheer them up’. Strong emotions are a normal part of grieving and your friend will appreciate your acceptance and understanding.

When your partner dies, don’t be afraid to show how you're feeling. Children learn about feelings by watching the adults around them, and it’s not helpful to be told they need to be brave.

When someone dies, a child’s sense of safety can be rocked. If you can, try to keep to a normal routine, which will make them feel safe, and keep them informed about plans for the day ahead, including when you will be home and who will be looking after them.
