Screws 🔩 & the assemblage of objects of art & science in the early modern German-speaking lands
I’d happily join you if I were in the US. I grew up playing board games with my father and sisters, but I rarely come across people who still like it.

And yet, there are many respectable historians who happily resort to a machine to do it all for them 🙁

Haha, merci! Zeer zeker mooi! 🙂

@karlgalle.bsky.social I don’t know if they sell it an a store somewhere, but if its cheaper to get if for you and ship it to the US than ordering it online: let me know.

I can send you the e-book version, if you still need it :)

Story of my dissertation life, really. My topic just doesn't fit in with the popular themes, so I am having trouble finding venues to present my work.

Thank you @hagenilda.bsky.social, for thinking of me ❤️ I saw the CfP but I don't work on the environment & couldn't make that work; otherwise I would have applied in a heartbeat. I also just submitted an abstract for a different session, on a non-dissertation related subject.

That's kind, thank you!

My pleasure!

One of the great things about being a member is that you get access to and can browse their archive of all bulletin articles! And I've seen a couple of online events too.
November 19, 2025 at 4:29 PM
Haha, it took me a while to find it again too after I had first spotted it. It's at the bottom of page 288.
November 19, 2025 at 3:56 PM
I also owe you an email—I haven't forgotten and will get to it soon!
November 19, 2025 at 3:44 PM
I'm sure I will (already am). I can answer the question you raise in footnote 30, if Turner ever used the term 'eyeballing' in print: He does, in the appendix you cite. See the screenshot attached. I spotted it while looking at Turner's work for the ivory nocturnal (after your recommendation) :)

Yes, they are interesting! There aren't many preserved early modern locks. Such a shame. A few years ago, a curator of arms and armor from the Met told me that locksmiths really were the jack of old trades in this period—they really are a fascinating group of metalworkers.
November 19, 2025 at 3:22 PM
The Met has some really great objects that I'd love to get my hands on 🔩, but with everything going on in the US right now, coupled with the insane rent in New York (and I'm assuming elsewhere), I'd much rather stay in beloved Germany.
November 19, 2025 at 3:03 PM
Yes, "of the right mind" is the key phrase here. The scholars, curators, and conservators in Munich (as well as in Berlin) have been incredibly helpful, generous, and welcoming.
November 19, 2025 at 2:59 PM
I saw, but my main sources are in Germany, and I'm not particularly eager to go back to the US (certainly not now).
November 19, 2025 at 2:40 PM
Haha, I have been informed about it by various people and through multiple channels (from/through people at the museum itself, you, Thony, several newsletter). I didn't really have much of a choice but to apply 🙃
