Both red and green were clearly visible to the eye in Massachusetts about an hour ago! This is the best I've ever seen in the states, but nights like this really make me miss Calgary.

The guy with advice about "misaligned partners" thinks it's actually totally fine and awesome to feed your work into the automated affirmation generator.

A real quote from the article telling you to pour words out of the plagiarism blender.

Fellow seismologists, we're going to get a lot of mileage out of the latest @xkcd.com

This was the score at the end of the musical, too.

It's official: me and 8,000 of my friends are astro-nots, not astronauts. 😆

I saw a great glory this year in the fog over Taku glacier on the Juneau Icefield! There's a faint fogbow over this one as well, and we saw 22° halos a few times, too.

Just updated my virus protection software!

Massachusetts wasn't offering COVID shots earlier this week, so I just scheduled a flu shot. The rules changed in the last couple of days, though, so I got both after all.

If you don't have yours yet, today is a great day to schedule an appointment!

I got to be glaciologist queen Elsa again this summer! ❄️💙

Also, I assume it's for AI bubble reasons that Outlook's spelling/grammar suggestions seem to be spouting more really bad answers than usual.

One punctuation mark is NOT all that's needed. Two exclamation points is a different mood than one, and I need that mood.

Today's @smbccomics.bsky.social is great and I bet David J. Griffiths thinks it's great, too. I met him once when he gave a seminar in my department when I was in undergrad. He was nice, spent a lot of time chatting with students, gave a fun and accessible talk, and signed our textbooks!

Juneau has passed the peak of the outburst flood from Mendenhall glacier. The very full lake from a few days ago is now a very empty lake, and floodwaters reached the modeled height nearly exactly. This was a record flood, and recovery will take time.
August 13, 2025 at 4:46 PM
The glacial lake outburst flood at Mendenhall is still just beginning and waters are already higher than last year's damaging peak. Depending on how quickly the lake drains, it could unfortunately be a record flood for Juneau. I hope residents have had the support they need to prepare and evacuate.

How common are earthquakes this big? Here are all of the events with a magnitude of 8.5 or larger since 1960: only ten of them!

I'm catching up on Connections from while I was teaching at glacier field school, and now I would like to be sent back to the icefield please.

Before I post more photos from the amazing time I had as JIRP faculty, I have something to share.

Two months ago, I got the offer for my next academic job: a great position at a great college with great people. After much thinking, I did one of the scariest things I've ever done.

I turned it down.

My phone's memories feature made me a collage of three different times at two different museums that I took a picture of Tiktaalik.

I'm back from glaciologist summer camp, AKA being faculty at Juneau Icefield Research Program! What did I miss in the rest of the world?

Goodbye outside world, hello Juneau Icefield Research Program! I'm on the next flight up!
