CDT Europe has joined 120+ organisations urging the Commission to halt this rollback. Europe’s digital future must be built on strong rights protections and accountability mechanisms, not deregulation disguised as “simplification.”

Despite clear warnings from civil society, the proposals would let providers of high-risk AI systems sidestep key obligations, expand exemptions long meant only for SMEs, and delay essential protections for people impacted by AI. A major step backwards for transparency and fundamental rights.

The AI Act doesn’t duplicate the GDPR or DSA, it complements them. Its targeted, proportionate rules are designed to fit seamlessly into existing compliance systems. Simplification shouldn’t come at the cost of accountability.
