Love a space wizard theme! We nailed the concept in the first round, but there were quite a few other concepts that I liked (the land astronauts...). She went through minor adjustments and colour palettes until her final form

10. The NecroDancer concepts
And lastly, the biggest tragedy of all is how many concepts went unused. Crime boss NecroDancer with Pom-Cerberus will never be fully realized, and for that, I cast all involved into the Shame Corner

9. NecroDancer (Burger Time edition)
Explorations of the NecroDancer's fast food adventure. This was originally revealed in an April Fool's piece I did before Rift was publicly announced.

8. The NecroDancer
The initial idea was for the NecroDancer to show up multiple times throughout the story, gaining more and more power as the player progressed. His involvement changed a lot over development that I'm not sure how it is in the final product.

7. Reaper
In contract with the Matron/Mummy, Reaper is very straight forward. Tying in with the Rift, I wanted her limbs to float in and out from the shadows of her cloak. I pictured her arms emerging similar to how Hsien Ko's sleeves work (Darkstalkers).

6. Mummy & Nightmare
I'll say it - I love the transformation to Mummy! I had the idea for the unraveling hair and dress from the start, but tying it into the other themes + Nightmare was complicated for the longest time. I think (hope) the final product is a good evolution/interpretation...

5. Matron & Dream
The Matron was a big pain, honestly (lol). I knew I wanted a music box theme combined with a Mother Goose storyteller look, but struggled to really pull it together until pretty late. This character had so many parts to breakdown, probably the most out of all the bosses.

4. King (Deep Blues) + 2nd phase
King is directly inspired buy Jigen (Lupin III)! The concept for their second phase would have seen an overgrowth of the flower theme and more disheveled looks as they lose their composure. King's poses with his vine-infested cello would have been fun, I think.

3. Queen (Deep Blues)
Both characters are nods to smoky lounge singers, much like their original boss designs were, but dialed up to 11. Queen's posing was meant to evoke model or Grecian statue vibes.

2. Banshee + Disguise
I loved making Banshee's few portrait poses super dramatic. Regarding her disguise, I don't know if it ended up making it into the final game, but she was meant to pretend to basically be a Dove superfan (Dove Otaku)

1. Harmony
Harmony's inspirations were 90's jpop idols and magical girls, a treat to concept! She is the only boss whose body faces away from Cadence when talking, to emphasize her haughty dismissiveness

5. Suzu
Loved working on Suzu. Her concepts mostly drew from street fashion and Japanese patterning. The one sleeve style of wearing the yukata was heavily inspired by Gintoki from Gintama.

Will post the enemies/bosses at a later date...

4. Nocturna
We had a lot of interesting ideas for Nocturna that I don't think made it to the final product. I was really happy to give her a more mature and distinct fashion sense.

3. Merlin & Heph
I love drawing magic users so Merlin was the easiest to develop out of the entire cast and basically went through zero concept design.

Heph accidentally ended up looking like a modern, softer Blackbeard from Our Flag Means Death (oops).

2. Dove
Dove was the easiest to translate since her original look was one of the few to not wear some kind of tunic. Looking back, I think her flower shop / hippie concepts are much more playful.

My work on Rift of the NecroDancer (a big fat thread)

1. Cadence
Her design shaped the style of the entire game. I aimed for something slightly exaggerated and easy to colour, drawing inspiration from Ace Attorney and Rhythm Heaven.
